Really haven't touched on this genre, so to get some chatter out there...

I've been gettin' into funk, african based improvisation, like 70's master, "Fela Kuti". If you haven't heard him, watch out, sh*t will make you want to move. Also, early 70's Miles Davis, a la, "On the Corner", along with Brazillian, samba based jazz tunes, like Getz/Gilberto. Also, been diggin' the new industrial based, hip-hop, improv, kind of like a DangerMouse on steroids kind of thing, House maybe?.

What kind of jazz do you like?

I used to really like jazz but the anal rententive nature of it now turns me off.

Adderley, Monk and Hubbard would laugh at the Jazz dorks taday.

yeah, I don't get jazz today. The people trying to be true to the genre are kinda boring, haven't added much, and the people who don't stay true are about as "jazz" as Bjork. I guess it's about the improvisation still, but I don't get with it if it sounds like a Weather Channel interlude.

Luckily, there's so much good stuff from the heyday that I may never grow tired of listening, though I don't sit down and listen to a ton every day.

What kind of jazz do you like?

Bebop, hard bop mostly (Dizzy/Bird/Monk to Rollins, Clifford Brown) and modal (Coltrane, Adderley, Miles), and wherever Mingus falls in there. Honestly, I believe my favorite lies somewhere around Dizzy's Big Band in the late 40s when he started bringing the Cuban and African beats in, but still ran a big band better than the remaining bands from the 30s.

I guess I tend to agree that jazz today is different than in the 50's, 60's, and 70's, when it was a massive movement and lots of artists had fresh ideas. Nowadays, only a few new artists have really made ripples, Dianna Krall, Marsalis family, etc.. The body of work put out in the past will have to carry us till a new genre is created, although, I think hip-hop, rap, and "techno" may have taken the place of "jazz". You can find some thought provoking electronic music today, and some may consider this "jazz". Oh well, I like it, and run into new artists every once in a while, like Fela Kuti, I also blast 88.9 lots for all you Charlateans.
