I was looking at an old tape today that had stuff about Sam Mills passing away on it. When I stopped the tape, I saw the headline on ESPN News that Heyward had died.

Always liked Ironhead. Very sad to hear :(

    Big man; heart of gold

Ironhead Hayward was one of the honored guests at the Ed Block Courage Awards banquet here in Baltimore in the spring of 1999. He arrived with wife Charlotte, carrying an infant son just six weeks old, and immediately volunteered to help establish a Courage House in Atlanta, even though he was undergoing heavy-duty chemo at the time. He had already lost the sight in one eye, but had hopes medics in Boston at the Harvard Cyclotron could prevent the tumor at the base of his skull from spreading. He gave it one helluva fight for a long time. Would that we all could be so brave.
