If we cut Jake

Which team is would he be starting for next year? I can think of several teams that would want him:

Oakland
Tampa
Green Bay (if Favre retires)
Vikings
Detroit
Chicago
Miami
Houston
Jacksonville


Those of you who are down on him need to realize that he is better than a lot of starters out there. There are several other teams he would be an upgrade to but those teams have too much tied up in young guys who are the "future" to bring in a guy like Jake.

No, he really isn't. He was about average from '03 to '05, but now for a team that has one of the top WR groups in the league and an above average pass blocking line he has still managed to be the worst QB in the entire league on 3rd downs as well as building on his highlight reel for "Dumbest NFL Interceptions."

He panics in the pocket, he has bad mechanics, he doesn't protect the ball when sacked, and now he's incredibly inaccurate. Right now the dude sucks, plain and simple.

He'd probably get a decent deal and at the very least fight for a start. And I believe in a lot of these competitions, he'd win. There are a number of teams there with young players, though, that would probably limit as to whether he'd look to head there.

Anyway, I'm wrong plenty of times and have admitted it plenty of times. I just happen to be right far more often than I'm wrong. As for the rest, I advocated Brad Johnson as a potential short-term starter here when he left Tampa Bay, and he did play well for Minnesota. But when someone in the Simms thread brought up Brad Johnson as someone for us to get if Minnesota cuts him this off-season, I said definitely not. As for right now, yes Brad Johnson is better than Delhomme, but I wouldn't want either to be our starter next season.

BUT many of his problems are correctable no? The guy has developed some bad habits and with professional help could be tutored back into being a much more effective QB I'm sure. Could he ever be Peyton Manning good? I'm sure he could not. Could he be a hell of a lot better that the Jake of this season and be plenty good enough? Absolutely.
Collin, if you want to argue that Jake is now beyond help that is going to be hard to prove. ANYONE who is smart enough to learn can be taught better technique and Jake obviously learned how to be effective and win here early on. It is not too late to get jake back on track (or at least try) and to suggest that he be thrown out with the nasty bath water would be reactionary and unwise at this point.

I would still take him, the way he is playing this year, over a lot of guys in the league who are starting. I think those "dumb interceptions" are the product of his placing too much faith in Keyshawn. It has always been a big part of his game to throw balls out there and let his receivers fight for them. Against Philly and Cinncy Keyshawn failed to fight for the ball hard enough.
