14. Williamson, WR - first time I think I've picked him. I still have major issues with him, but unlike Roddy White, I'm coming around to him being worth a top 15. We don't need him beyond a doubt, but he would add some offensive explosion, and anything that keeps us from being the run-run-draw team, I'm for that. Where we'll fit him in, that's much harder to say, being how our O active roster falls.
Ideally, I'd like a DT here, but I don't care about Johnson, Cody, or Hawthorne enough to say I need one over the other. And one will be there around 2, as will Castillo.
45. Anttaj Hawthorne, DT. Turns out one was here, though I didn't get to choose between he and Castillo. Obvious insurance for Buckner, Jenkins' injury; leaves Moorehead as an excellent part time player as he always should be.
Want a guard there, miss out on two, and though they have Johnson there, I neither find him good fit nor value. Evan Mathis in 3 is a goal, though you can look down and see he'll go before that. Also looking for a back, though I'm expecting whoever it is will be insurance, not an immediate contributor, so I'm not looking for a high one. In this sim, you see the CBs I'd targeted as nickelbacks/developmental replacements (Jackson, Webster) going before 45. So my point wouldn't hold water as much here, though Browning still lasts.
79. Robert McCune, LB. Going on the supposition that he could play SLB as well; problem is, he's a typical Carolina pick (he's a short linebacker) and we could really use some height. Since none of the ILBs in this draft are that tall, though, and since Sam likes them smaller, he's a perfect fit and great insurance for two spots, if not three.
115. Jason Brown, C/G. Not as athletic as I'd like, but for a 4, I can deal with it. He's strong enough to handle the DTs head on, and has the versatility. If he has more trouble with mobility, he'll still be well shielded at RG.
149. Hamza Abdullah, SS. 4.62 40 hurts, but had fastest cone at SS and has been productive and covers the TE well. For a backup, fits the role very well.
Passed on James Butler simply because I see so many DBs that we've signed to deals to keep - Wesley, Hampton, Jackson, etc - and I don't know that he fits at SS.
169. Ray Willis, OT
171, Manuel White, RB/FB.
Willis by this point makes sense because you can plug him in and mess with him, gives you that wildcard. Is he a RG, a RT? He's an exceptional run blocker and by this point, getting a guy who can do one thing well is as good as it gets. On the other hand, he's pretty much exactly the opposite of what the team likes in a lineman.
White sticks on the roster part-time because of his potential dual role, which should help next year's depth. But does he beat out Cramer?
189. Lionel Gates, RB. Makes no sense to fall this far, but we'll take him. With uncertainty at the position, there's no reason to understock like last year. Inevitably, either he or White will suck anyway, if not both, so you at least get to throw a number of carries at him (and away from our already-banged-up vets) to see if he can handle it. If you don't have room for him, you don't have room; but I'd rather burn a 6 to have the problem than a 1.
207. Matt Payne, K/P, BYU. Big dual-purpose K/P guy has a hell of a leg, needs to learn a little control, but a tremendous talent, and no, not the first time I've put him in a simulation this year.
