Then why does no one else ever talk about his "brother" at any other point in the movie?

You'd think a twin brother that had made himself into an oil baron would be of some note from a small town. There is plenty to support the idea that Paul Dano has multiple personality disorder.

i agree. it's definitely one person.

they are never seen together and are played by one actor. it makes the movie much deeper.

i don't think he was an "oil barron" so much as reasonably successful. given that all the area had oil, i'm sure plenty of people made some money.

eli also mentions paul in regards to selling them out to plainview.

according to imdb there was a different actor cast to play paul, but it didn't work out so they just used plano for both parts.
