in the end it will all be forgotten , but what's your opinion about how it was handled.........the Bunting firing in mid-season, the Butch hiring before season is completed, a press conf scheduled 2 weeks away to follow last game...........???

Smart move. Everyone knew it was coming, so this kept Bunting from having to answer questions about his job and allowed the university to start talking with candidates.

Only thing I'd have done different, is I'd have considered elliminating Bunting as the lame duck coach. That's the reason it took this long to announce a coach. It was Bunting's request that the announcement wait till after homecoming.

Compared to what happened to State w/ the BBall search, it went very well.

One coach interviewed- one coach hired.

That would of been like State getting Rick Barnes or Calipari.

Should have done it BEFORE the season. Don't see why they didn't.

While it was a crappy thing to do IMO...they couldn't wait. They have a pretty good recruiting class coming in. While they will lose several guys to other teams...getting Davis in NOW keeps the class from falling apart completely.

I see

I see it much different than the State BB coach search. Butch Davis was available / unemployed as a coach.
State was trying to lure Barnes & Calipari away from established coaching positions at their univ's.

what happened to "Butch" at the Cleveland Browns job? did he just up & leave in mid-season?

any guesses on how many yr's will he be at UNC before he bolts for a higher profile in the SEC or Big 10 ?

Didn't he get fired by the Browns?

He's still a gamble. He had 5 years of success at Thug U...but they have no problem bringing in the big names. Now he's going to have to bring in top talent while surrounded by UT, USC, VT and Clemson...all who have made major inroads into NC. Not to mention Wake and NC State. I still think he'll do fine.

Him leaving for a major program (SEC or Big 10) would depend partially on his buyout. Do we know what that is? Does he have any schools listed where he gets a free out?

You're a State fan aren't you. Everything you've addressed are the things floating around State boards as to why he'll bust at UNC.

As far as the State coaching job went, it would've been like UNC downgrading from Bunting had it gone the same. Sendeck wasn't a bad coach. He was doing what he could with what he had at hand and the fans basically drove him away.

As for the Browns gig, Davis was basically asked to step down or be fired. So he was basically let go. Then again he's the only coach to take the Browns to the playoffs in long time.

As far as leaving early, I guess its possible, but then again if UNC is a national power by the time he leaves does it matter? If you're a national power and willing to pay, they could possibly retain him or get another up and coming guy. I think Magnus said it before. If you can get a guy like Davis, you appreciate it for what its for rather than looking at "what ifs".

Then again if you look at State's shitty team this year, and consider what talent Amato has wasted, you've gotta figure they won't even be in competition themselves.
