Lewis and Kemo are the starters. Walker and Scott are the backups. Hayden is in the mix. Will we keep five?

We usually keep 9 defensive lineman or so. So maybe.

QBs 2-3
OL-9
RB-5-6
WR-5-6
TE-3-4
DL-9
LB-7-8
DBs-9
ST-3-4

with our end situation, pre-draft I was somewhat expecting 5 DE. Of course, we didn't come away with an end of note; maybe that kid Taylor makes an impact and shows something on ST, but I doubt 5 ends make it active. Chances are, four ends and 3 tackles are active on most Sundays this year, and the emphasis is on guys who can contribute there. More LB and DB active but for ST duty. There should be room for Hayden if he earns it, and Scott if so, but not necessarily active duty.

5 DEs and 3 Tackles

Probably Peppers, Johnson, McClover, Brayton at DE but who is the fifth? They might want to go with 4 DTs active unless they find another guy who can play at DE.

I would say 4 DEs and 4 DTs on the active roster. Peppers, Brayton, Johnson and McClover being the DEs and Kemo, Lewis, Scott and Walker as the DTs. Kemo is a big guy and one active DT to rotate thoughout the game might be stretching it. Then, if you factor the --uh "I" word during the course of the game, then there would be no backup to rotate out.

Plus, I think McClover can be a pass rush specialist, moreso than an every down DE. We shelve Taylor and Hayden for a year on the practice squad for them to develop.

I think you kind of need 4 active DTs. We tend to rotate them a lot and 3 would make that hard. I think we keep Hayden on the roster just maybe not active on game days.

I wouldn't be sruprised to see a guy like Hayden make it over Scott. Scott is nothing special.

Competition is a good thing. If Hayden beats out Scott then so be it. I look for us to keep Hayden in any event though.
