But to me, there are 2 reasons a team fails to produce on the ice.
1. Bad coaching
2. Team Spirit.
Now both of these reasons tend to cross into each other sometimes. A coach can be brillant and come up with the best of plays, and yet not have any relationship with the players. So the players don't respect the coach and fail to play their best. Or the coach can just outright suck at his job. Or the players can just outright not give 100% and just not give a damn. Or maybe be in a slump.
I think what happened with the Canes was they felt they had a lot to live up to. High expectations were floating around after the playoff run. As a fan that had watched them closely for a few years...I knew they had the on-ice ability to take that playoff run to the end. But they lacked belief in themselves and the heart to pursue it. And yet they found both and it was beautiful to watch.
As Herb Brooks says, you can't win on skill alone.
Look at any goalie. Hes either hot or totally off his game.Its that way with all the players but you have to know each one well enough to be able to tell by how they play each night.
Honestly I think what they lacked was good old fashioned motivation. The players have to want to win for a win to happen. Any coach that can find the key to lighting a fire under each players ass...is a winning coach. Assuming he has a GM with talent for signing capable players which is totally another thread.
