I hope. I just made it up.
For the last seven years, the team that knocked Duke out of the tourney has played in or won the National Championship game. Now, in those seven years, there are three Final Fours and a NC for Duke, which kind of self-satisfies this stat. But there are also three Sweet Sixteen losses and an Elite Eight loss. Here's the breakdown:
1998: Kentucky beat Duke in the Elite Eight to win the NC.
1999: UConn beat Duke in the NC game.
2000: Florida beat Duke in the Sweet Sixteen. They lost to Michigan State in the NC game.
2001: Duke won the NC.
2002: Indiana beat Duke in the Sweet Sixteen and lost to Maryland in the NC game.
2003: Kansas beat Duke in the Sweet Sixteen and lost to Syracuse in the NC game.
2004: UConn beat Duke in the Final Four on their way to the NC.
This stat is interesting in the fact that as a Duke fan, I can take solace that my team didn't really get upset. They lost to a capable team that proved their worth over the rest of the tourney. Nothing worse than losing to a team that goes out like a bitch in the next round.
