• SMART MOVE: The Panthers signed restricted free agent running back Rod Smart to his one-year, $628,000 contract.

As a restricted free agent, the Panthers could have matched any offer for "He Hate Me," but they wouldn't have received any compensation if he left since he was not drafted. His agent, Steve Forest, said that Smart considered the one-year deal here his best option.

Smart was primarily used on special teams last year, but got occasional work on offense behind Stephen Davis and DeShaun Foster.
