Trufant - The final piece to a strong defence

So what do you do if you pay a lot of money for Leftwich at 9. JD turns out to be a top 10 QB and we make the playoffs? Certainly you would not trade JD next year just so you could play what would still be an unknown? How long can you sit on a first round QB, probably the 2nd QB picked before your money starts to be a bad investment?

How long did the niners sit on steve young? How long did the jets sit on chad pennington? JD is a free agent in 2 years, maybe he can go to KC like Joe Montana did.

Oh to have that dilema. You think St Louis has entertained offers for Bulger?
Certainly you would not trade JD next year just so you could play what would still be an unknown?

Brett Favre started 3 games in his first 2 years and turned out to be a deent QB

Collins started from day one and well he is just ok in my book.

All I am saying that is if we have the chance to draft this guy, we should as we can hold him back a year or so and let him learn the pro game. Why throw him to the wolves like so many teams have done before? We can get a talented OL in the second rd to protect the QB and block for Davis. As far as DB we had the #2 defence last year. Another year under Fox and new Def Coor. should only make them better. I would welcome any of the three as ALL of them have fantastic upsides for a variety of reasons.

I want to win next season. I want to make the playoffs. Gross and Trufant both help us do that. Any QB we draft will not. We have a good defense, a good running back and slightly above verage receiving corp. We have some potential at QB in Delhomme and a saftey net in Peete. I would rather add a player who will start right away and help us get to the next level rather than get a guy to sit on the bench and have about a 50-50 shot of making it.

I feel like we can win next year even if our 1st rounder sits on his ass for a while, it's not just about one guy. If we don't get a young QB to groom, (doesn't have to be leftwich, btw) we're going to be in the same situation we've been in since Bline got cut...what are we going to do if Delhomme lights it up and wants a HUGE contract extension that we can't afford at the time? What are we going to do if Delhomme sucks it up and all we have is Peete as a "saftey net"? We should get a QB on day one, not necessarily 1st round either, I'll be happy with Gross or Trufant, but QB is definitely a long term issue for us. I feel that Trufant is the "safer" choice, and would be thrilled to have him, and see what falls to rounds 2-3. But the draft isn't about just winning next year, Thelt.

Gross - A strong pass blocker, but only an average run blocker. Is undersized to plat either OT in the NFL. Needs to put on 20-30 more lbs, but doesn't have the frame to do it. Becasue of that he won't be able to grow. For those that say he'll be a LT in the future don't bet on it... he's a 1/2 step up from Melvin Tuten and a step back from Chris Terry. In a year where the OT in the draft are all very close to being equal I save my O-Line pick until the second round. If I were grading this year's overall OT crop I'd give them an average of B and Gross only earns a B+. And while that makes him the top of this class it doesn't mean he'll be the best OT to come out of this group 2-3 years from now.

Trufant - I like this pick. It fills a need and we can take it early. A CB even CLOSE to his calibur won't be available in later rounds.

Leftwich - To be honest he's not my TOP pick because I want to see our rookie start next year, but none the less I'd be thrilled with it knowing that we'll have one of the elites in 2-3 years.

I am all about having a young QB being groomed to take over. That is where we screwed up with Bline, Lewis was not a worthy understudy. If we draft a QB in the later rounds I will be happy to have him. I have still not given up on Fasani though. He may be a good QB in three years if we keep grooming him. If we draft a QB at #9 there is no way we will sit on him for very long. We will be stuck starting an unproven QB again when we do decide to give him the reins. I would rather give Delhomme and Fasani another year to see if they are the answers. If not we can draft a QB next year.

exactly why I wanted Palmer. I feel like he could start his rookie year. Outside of Palmer, I don't want a QB in the first round.

Actually, I don't want to draft a QB at all this year. Signing Delhomme, IMO, gave us an extra draft pick to use on some depth or another need.
