Analysis
Positives: Has good size with a thick chest, broad shoulders and a developing frame that can carry additional bulk … Effective in moving out to seal the corner and demonstrates adequate upfield blocking skills … Shuffles his feet to gain position when walling off his man … Has worked hard to develop proper hand punch techniques in pass protection … Has a decent burst off the snap and the change-of-direction agility to get out in front on traps and pulls … Better as a center than tackle, as he is more comfortable working in combination with his guards than being isolated in one-on-one matchups on the edge.
Negatives: Has good weight room strength, but it does not translate to the football field … Still over-extends when trying to work the screen … Gets too high in his stance and shows a narrow leg base in pass protection, causing defenders to knock him off stride … Sloppy trying to pick up the blitz, as he tends to drop his hands too quickly after the initial hit … Has to show better backpedaling ability, as he has difficulties dipping his hips to contain the bull rush … Stamina is an issue, as he seems to wear down late in games … Lacks the leg strength to get a good anchor and needs to show more force behind his hand punch … Not the type than can be counted on to neutralize linebackers in the second level, as he shows stiffness in his running stride and is late to make contact on the move.
Career Notes
Hangartner is a tall, aggressive drive blocker whose versatility proved to be invaluable for the Aggies in 2004. With the coaching staff not satisfied with the depth at strongside tackle, they asked Hangartner to shift to that position as a senior. He went on to earn All-Big 12 Conference honors.
Hangartner was a second-team all-state selection who helped New Braunfels High School to a pair of playoff berths. He added All-District and All-San Antonio honors as a senior. He enrolled at Texas A&M in 2000, spending the season as a redshirt.
In 2001, he saw limited duty as a reserve center. Hangartner replaced Seth McKinney at center in 2002, starting every game. He was named the offensive line's co-MVP in 2003 and earned All-Big 12 Conference honorable mention as a center. He helped the team average 6.4 yards per play in 2004, the second-best season total in school history.
