General offensive thoughts

After reflecting and reading the observations here is what i think.

1. OL is the biggest weakness. Wash did what Dallas did. They played both S's off in a cover 2 look, and only put 7 in the box. Jake was checking out of pass plays to run plays, and thier front 7 was beating our OL, TE, FB.

2. When we did throw, his habit of only looking at Steve Smith, then Key was killing us. They had both doubled and then were able to get pressure from their front 4. Again, bad OL.

3. So when Smitty and Key were covered, he made bad decisions. Like the Seattle game. He tried forcing it to them, or checked down to plays that didn't get the needed yardage. According to Baldinger the middle of the field was wide open. But being a 3rd WR in our offense with our QB is like trying to pick up chicks with a bad acne problem. Finally, we are predictable.

First Down - Run it/throw a WR screen, or throw it deep.
Second Down - if the pass on first down was incomplete or a run for 2 yards or less, then 2nd down is ALWAYS a run. And since it's predictable and our OL sucks, we get 1-2 yards at best. That sets up...
Third and Long.....double Smith, double Keyshaun, cover the back/TE/3rd WR man to man and rush 4. You get pressure and Jake either makes a bad decision or bad pass. Since our TE is slower than most LB's that's an easy cover.

I've gotten to where I can tell you if we're going to get a first down on the series after our first down play is run. If it's an incomplete pass or a run for 2 yards or less, we won't get a first down. See pattern above.

Well, imo, our offense is generally offensive to Panther Fans on about 75% of their plays.

You hit the nail on the head. WE ARE TOO FUCKING PREDICTABLE!!!!! If everyone in the stadium knew that the ball was going to Hoover for a TD during the Rams game, then we've got a problem. And it seems the problem is Henning. He runs the same shit year after year. It never gets changed.

1st down- a short pass to Smitty, a gain of 3 yds.
2nd down- dive right for 1 yd.
3rd down- a short pass to the left for 2 yds. to Keyshawn
4th down- punt with a 40 yd. return

Now, if we were 3rd and long (10, 15, 20+ yds.) we run either up the middle for no gain OR dive right for no gain or a 2yd. gain. My hubby and son can call the plays that we are going to run from the stands and 9 times outta 10 they are correct.

The game has left Henning behind and he needs to go. And when he leaves he needs to take Trgo and Crossman with him.

If you look at the last two years, and see when Jake has struggled the most, it seems to be against teams that play 2 deep zones, don't blitz, get pressure and stop the run with 4. If you can do those things, Jake's going to throw into coverage. And even if he doesn't, and dinks it short, we will struggle to make first downs doing that (last year vs Buffalo comes to mind).

Jake's significantly worse with his accuraccy this year, so this isn't an excuse for him. But I'd agree that this is the offense's biggest weakness.

We've got to be able to run against a two deep zone. If you can't, league wide, teams struggle. I question why anyone would give us an 8 man front. The biggest problem is that I don't know that we can solve it. It's a physical problem up front.

We definately forced the ball down field. Did you see the shot of how much room Rodgers was giving up when he was singling up Smitty? We had an easy 15 yards on an out route, but we kept calling deep routes on the outside until the 4th quarter came. Last few weeks we seem to be forcing the deep ball too much, and it's part of the reason we get into so many third and longs. It's been too much of our offense.

In 2004, we seemed to hit a lot more intermediate routes with Moose, Colbert, and RP. Of course, we got decent run production that year when defenses gave us that 2 deep look, at least when we went on our run.

It ain't just Jake, but it's a big portion. Jake's got to be more accurrate. He's had some bad games in previous years, but that has not been the norm by any stretch of the imagination in the past. Stastically, this is by far his worst season. He's on pace for less yards and less touchdowns of any year as a starter, and his lowest passer rating.



Predicatability with Henning has been a theme, but I come back to execution.

Yep. Running the quick stuff has helped it a little bit, but I know it's not what they want to do, they want the lead plays.

The outs were there. We needed to take advantage, and didn't. If they sit on the route, then you go deep. Jake didn't read that well and obviously the call wasn't there.
And Key was pulling the short stuff, even though we went to the 0 route a few too many times early. We went away from using him much at all later, though.

Last few weeks we seem to be forcing the deep ball too much, and it's part of the reason we get into so many third and longs. It's been too much of our offense.

It's a drive killer. 1st down chuck, 2nd and 10 gets you two on the ground, and 3rd and 8 means pressure on Jake.

both are subpar. You can survive a struggling run game, the passing game being so shitty has cost us. You have to be able to do one of them, at least.
