Formatting a drive

When I do that from command prompt, it tells me the 'volume is in use by another process'

It ask me if I want to 'force a dismount on this volume' I say yes, it says, no can do.

You need a bootable floppy disk of some kind with the format.exe program on it.

Better yet, if you're going to install XP from scratch, use an XP install CD.

Either boot from a disk to the command prompt or use the disk that came with the drive.

If none of that works, use this handy tool:

if you have an internal cdrom, go into bios setup and make it the boot disk, the pop in the operating system cd and fire up the laptop, it'll axe you if you want to format the hd and do a clean install.

no need to thank me, I always ready to help my fellow man.
