I have a wireless network and when I try to enable the WEP encryption, I can no longer connect to my RR service. What am I doing wrong? I just want to make sure I'm not supplying internet service or file sharing with the rest of my community.

I think you have to have a WEP server to approve the wireless connection. I'm kinda fuzzy on wireless, so someone else might know more. LEAP will let you set your own encryption string.

It might help if you explain how you have the RR modem setup (cables) with the AP. Are you using a hub also?

I've got the Toshiba modem supplied by RR. And the Dell TrueMobile router/wireless transmitter and PCMCIA card.

When I try to engage the WEP encryption, I no longer have a RR connection. It's like it blocks it from use. I've got my firewall turned on, but I don't know if that will keep people off my computer even if they get connected to my wireless network.


What is the AP? I can't think this morning.

Ok....the router has an input from the modem with a Cat5 cable. The modem is connected to the cable outlet as normally would be. And between the router and the machine is nothing but air.

are you trying to use 128 or 64 bit WEP encryption?

Also make sure the SID is the same for your laptop and AP

I think Cisco makes AP's for Dell, so the wireless network name has to be the set on the wireless card. Probably 'tsunami'.

I changed the passwords like that article said was a good idea. And the wireless network I'm surfing on was renamed by me to eliminate the same issues. I think it's a 128 WEP that's trying to run....but when I turn it on everything that was working doesn't work anymore. I've checked all the passwords and they all stay the same. I just can't figure it out. Oh well, fuck it. I just won't share anything on my computer and hope that works for me.
