Chris Spielman has an annual Mock Draft Party for his local radio show up here in Columbus. The station takes applications from listeners to be the general manager of their favorite team. On the day before the real draft, they hold a one round mock draft live on the show.
Got the call a few minutes ago. The Panthers pick has been assigned to me
The restaurant where they hold the mock is set up a lot like the actual draft. Each GM has their own table with a team helmet sitting in the middle of it. They have draft information that you can use (if you don't have your own) and pads for you to scribble notes and write down the player you've chosen. At your appointed time, you hand the pick to a runner, then it's taken to the front and read from the podium (just like in New York).
After your pick is read, Spielman and his co-hosts analyze whether they think you nailed it or not. You're expected to be able to stand up and explain your rationale behind it. If Spielman thinks you whiffed, he's not at all shy about saying so. He's also been known to ask some pretty pointed questions, so you better know what you're talking about when the time comes or you look like a twit.
This will actually be my second stint as the Panthers GM. I also had a chance to do it two years ago. My pick at the time was Michael Clayton. Chris Gamble was long gone by the time they got to me. In the real draft that year, Clayton went high and Gamble came to us. For the record, Spielman liked my pick, but his co-host didn't.
Also of interest, two years ago the party was attended by Mike Vrabel. They sat him at the table next to mine (Panthers were 31st, Patriots 32nd). I actually had the chance to trash talk him a little bit when i read my pick. Probably not the brightest thing I ever did, but I've been accused of having more balls than brains once or twice in my life.
In any case, it's free all you can eat wings, you get a nice little prize package for being there, and the station's "Fan Girls" and "Stat Girl" are there to help out, so some of the scenery looks pretty good too. All in all, it's a real blast to attend.
The big thing now is I have to decide who the Panthers take at #27 (no trades).
