Feel-good Fields gets a scare

Perhaps the best story of this NFL season is the remarkable return of good guy Mark Fields, the Panthers linebacker who missed last season battling cancer only to beat it and return to action this year.

Fields had quite a scare last week that luckily turned out to be just that — only a scare. Following the Panthers' win over the 49ers, a test showed a hot spot in the area where doctors had previously found a grapefruit-sized tumor. Doctors called Fields and told him he needs another biopsy, which sent the linebacker on an emotional rollercoaster.

"Hearing that, man, I just couldn't go through that again," said Fields. "After all I went through, you can't imagine how bad that is — all the stuff they pump in your body and all the little kids you see at the hospital. Just hearing the possibility that it could be back was a little too much that day."

Fields was so upset he never went to work that day, sending coach John Fox and the rest of the team into a worried frenzy. Fields simply needed to go clear his head. Fortunately, all his tests came back completely clean and he will not need another scan for six weeks.

Fields says he feels great but notes he's not yet 100 percent. He feels it most in his wind on the field. It takes a little longer to catch his breath than normal.

"I won't be until after this off-season," he said. "Next year I'll be 100 percent back to where I was before."

For now, he has about 35-40 plays at top speed in him per game. The team will continue to monitor him and Fox says they need to do a better job of making sure they don't overwork him.

grapefruit sized tumor, holy shit. thank goodness.

when a tumor forms in the body cavity there is quite a bit of room for it to grow undetected. Most organs can bend and give space to a growing tumor without discomfort.
