FA's Which do we want, which want us?

There was the rumor going around that after the Filthy game that Fox told Troy Vincent to hang by the phone after the season was over and wait for a call from the Panthers.

I watched the tape again today and at the end of the game he and Vincent were having a conversation before congratulating Reid. That is what started me thinking about the FA issue.

I thinks we can sign Charles Woodson or maybe Fernando Bryant.Keep in mind that we mit need to allso Sign A WR or 2 .I wouid the Cats to sign Justin McCareins or Tai Streets.Allso we mit need to sign A QB becuase chanes are is that Rodney Peete wont be back.I wouid love to wrok with Philly a trade to get A.J. Feeley,Or if not him we couid sign Anthony Wright.Btw what other area do you thinks we need to updated in the FA's .I thinks we need to sign anther RG as wall as a LB and we allso need anther FS

With or without Peete we won't need to trade for a backup QB. The Weinkster can handle it, and we can draft one to groom on day two. I like McCareins too but so do the Titans and they will probably pay to keep him.

IMO we mostly just need to sign our OWN players. We should be able to even find a way of retaining Wallace damnit (but from all I keep hearing it is not going to happen). It would be great to get Vincent for a couple of years and I personally like LB Clark Haggans (Steelers UFA).

Haggans was making plays all over the field with 6 tackles 2 sacks 1 PD and a FF against us in preseason. We might not have to pay that much to lure him away from a shaky situation in Pit. He started in place of “shot in the ass” Porter at RILB that night and has been backing up Gildon at LOLB. I have no idea if he is fast enough or can cover well enough for our system but he made a definite impression on me in that game. The 26 year old 6’3” 250 pound Haggans is worth a look.)

Well with their cap situation, they'll have a hard time signing anyone..even if he is a RFA. They have Kearse and Bennett to worry about. I think they are over the cap by 15-16 million..

Y'all are driving me crazy.
Been talking about this all year, and then Super Bowl week everybody wants to get an intro thread on the offseason.

It does in fact start with our own guys, more than anything. Imperative that we do what it takes to resign James, Grant, and then do the requisite things with Smith, Muhammad, Steussie, if necessary.

Past that, there aren't any guys who the team are interested in, publicly, nor have any players come forth saying they'd like to be here.

WP made an article on it, which I didn't necessarily agree with all the selections, but nonetheless shows a number of NFL FAs who have some sort of connection to the Panthers or coaches or players currently here.

McCareins is a good choice. However, both he and Bennett suggest a decent contract, and since we're after a guy who'll currently be a backup, I don't know that it's worth it to give either the contract it'd cost to be here.

Needs: WR, CB, LB, G, DE (backups), TE

We need to take care of our guys first, but you have to know the trip to the Super Bowl is gonna drive up some prices.

UFA
-----
Donnalley-worth another year, two tops at the minimum with incentives
Dyson-the great unknown, talent may not out weigh injury history
Favors-upgrade, Fields will be back-draft the backup. Gone
Grant-before the season I wasn't so sure. Keep him
Howard-I'm waffling here, but we can do better (FA/Draft). Nickel back tops
James-don't let him off the plane back from Houston without a contract
Kasay-re-sign him cheap or replace him (even though I'd hate it)
Kyle-good at what he does, is he worth the cap hit for a one dimensional guy?
Mangum-let him be some one else's problem please
Pittman-depends on rehab and price tag. Wallace leaving may force our hand
Reyes-see ya
Towns-love his effort, just doesn't fit what we do now.
Wallace-be seeing you Big Al, he'll start somewhere next year (hopefully in the AFC)
Wiggins-good backup, cheap too
Willig-cheap, experienced backup

RFA
----
Allen-cheap backup, can start in a pinch. keep him
Cooper-if he gets his shit together off the field, keep him (cheap)
Goings-more lives than a black cat, some how he stays
Smart-he's developed a cult following, keep him if cheap
Smith-money bags, he'll cash in
Tillman-gone

Restructure Steussie and Moose if need be.

As far as FA's go, I expect us to continue looking at mostly nondescript guys as we have the last couple of years. We won't persue the top dollar guys, that's not our MO any more. We'll look at second tier guys (Winfield at CB as opposed to Woodson and Bailey for example) where we'll get more bang for our buck.

Then there'll be guys cut also. Brzeznski heads the list there. Probably a couple more also (Tuten,Peete?,Weinke?)

Short list of guys I'd be interested in depending on our moves/losses in FA

Anthony Wright QB
A J Feely QB*
Mike McMahon QB*
Terelle Smith FB (imagine Davis or Foster behind this guy)
Marcus Robinson WR
Dennis Northcut WR
Drew Bennett WR* (ain't gonna happen, but one can hope)
Darrell Jackson WR (out of our price range probably)
Alex Bannister WR* (imagine Hankton with hands)
Wesley Walls TE let him retire here now that Henning's realized the TE isn't another OT
Brian Kozlowski TE just what we're looking for in an H back, blocking TE
Floyd Womack OT* also can play G
Rick DeMulling G* decent player, probably cheap also
Damien Woody C also can play G
Ebenezer Ekuban DE should be fairly cheap, can take Wallace's place
Bernardo Harris LB
Clark Haggans LB
Ian Gold LB
Dhani Jones LB
Brandon Short LB
Randall Godfrey LB
Antoine Winfield CB
Fernando Bryant CB
Troy Vincent CB
Bobby Taylor CB
Arturo Freeman S
Shawn Wooden S

*-denotes RFA

there are options out there for many positions of need we won't have to break the bank to sign. Add in a decent draft and we can continue to improve the team.
