Exclusive rights tag to be placed on Julian Peterson

The San Francisco 49ers are expected to place the exclusive franchise tag on linebacker Julian Peterson on Monday, ESPN.com's John Clayton reports.


By placing the "exclusive" tag on Peterson, the four-year veteran will not be able to seek competing offers from other teams.


As a result of the move, San Francisco cannot put the franchise tag on wide receiver Terrell Owens, who will become a free agent March 3.


Owens' return to San Francisco has appeared less and less likely this offseason.


Owens, 30, known as much for his attitude as his skills, has been vocal in his unhappiness with quarterback Jeff Garcia, saying on his Web site in December he would not play for the Niners as long as Garcia was there.


Peterson, 25, was the Niners' second-leading tackler, with 95 tackles and seven sacks last season.


He was selected by the Niners with the 16th overall pick in the 2000 draft.

A MLB will usually get more than an OLB. But if Peterson gets a huge deal, Morgan stays healthy, and we want to resign him, it will be trouble. Maybe.

Peterson is very versatile, so his play in coverage and pass rush can't be measured in tackles. Seven sacks - that's pretty good imo. It's not like they run a 3-4 either.

Dan may prove me wrong, but I don't think so. If memory serves, he was one of, if not the first 1st rounders signed in 2001. He's not about the money, he's about playing football.

Doubtful, that it'll be that huge an issue.
Just like that diatribe your guy Russ went on and on about, Morgan wanting to go to one of the Florida teams and how we have to sign him to an extension now (even if that were the case, of course, why would he sign an extension now, to stay if he doesn't want to stay?). Exactly. And his injury history will definitely be a factor when his contract comes due.
