I have a DVD(homemade) that arrived from overseas and won't seem to play in our DVD player. It will play in our laptop after I loaded up a codec. Any way to get it to play in the regular DVD player?

Harry's pretty much right. You're chances aren't to good for getting it to play on the DVD player you have. You'll have to buy one that supports more than one region code. If you have a Playstation2, PS3, XBOX, or XBOX 360 you can try it in one of those.Sounds like a region issue VA.
Do you know about that? If not, google your model and region playback. There's stuff out there, but I think each unit is different, and some of them cant be rigged to play DVDs from other regions.
It's another bullshit DRM issue.

Not necessarily. It could be the TV format that is the problem.
