I guess you have to be catholic to understand. It all seems kind of silly to me. Kind of like the Queen of England.

but oher religions are just as wide spread and they have no pope figure. i dont really understand what he does or what power he has...kinda like the Queen. do they actually worship him

Actually the Vatican is it's own country. The Pope is the Vatican's President. The have an army, The Swiss Guard and a national intelligence department.

yeah, there are other religions without a single leader, but they easily fracture. the catholic church's stance comes from the pope. either you listen to the pope and are catholic or you don't and you're not.

i mean that more in the sense of church affiliation. maybe i'm wrong, but the recent schism with the episcopals seems like i good example. some say homosexuals can be priests, some say no. the leadership is divided. i don't think you have much of that in the catholic church.
