Defense

sucked today. And just when we needed it worst.

Lucas makes one mistake. And it's late, with them needing 35 yards to line up for a FG. Taa daa, there's Joe Horn's one good play all day, 25 yards.

We spend a first on a guy to take on the TE, and Ernie Conwell has a career day.

Then, finally, we "cover" him, by taking his head off. Which, I don't care if Davis is hurt or not, McCree probably oughta start. He's still a shit coverage guy, but Davis will be here when he's ready. I saw him, more than once, just stand there on the snap like "now what?" and I don't want to see that. He's a football player, and he'll be a great one, but he's not ready.

Peppers was active. But against a strong, young OT that was obviously shaken by his mere presence, held sackless. Sure, they doubled him all the time. Where was everybody else?

Witherspoon was the only player on that field that consistently made plays. WW made mistakes, I'm sure, but he wasn't out there blatantly fucking up, and made a full 20% of our tackles.

They ran a lot. Granted, that can negate stats for a defense, so even if we didnt have those gifts, we coulda still been more than solid.

But there were NO big plays....whenever they needed something, it was there. Whenever they needed to convert, it was there. Whenever we needed a stop, we couldnt.

The times they turned the ball over were due to luck....THe Caretaker fumbling with no one close to him, and the fourth and one with Brown jumping....

Manning really blew that Horn play. You eventually have to turn around, but he didn't.
All in all, it wasn't a terrible day. If you showed me the stat line w/o the final score, I'd have though we've won by 10. I happen to think our problem is more on 2nd down, not 3rd. It seems like we attack on 1st, only to give back, and then some, on 2nd. If you keep giving an effecient offense 3rd and -4 situations, they'll convert their share.

Shit. That was Manning, wasn't it? The Lucas play I'm thinking of, was earlier.

Agreed. And we should've, if you consider that we left 7 on the field in the first half, and they never should've had time to kick at the end.

Did Morgan have any tackles today? I don`t remember his name being called out.

three and an assist. Totally middle of the road, unimpressive performance. Only time I really remember him, he knocked a receiver out of bounds once, and had a couple blitzes that neither looked like a guy with the speed Morgan supposedly has, nor the skill of a first round pick.

I thought Peppers had a forced fumble in the 1st half. Something in the backfield happened that stopped their drive. I can't remember what it was, but I thought it was Peppers.

Most of those catches by Conwell were on Spoon. He had some nice plays late, but he was usually the guy chasing Conwell immediately after he caught yet another nice pass. Davis gave up the 1st, and immediately another to a WR, but after that it was Spoon.

so i ask it again. why are we pressing with our weakest DB on their best WR in that situation with 25 seconds on the clock? why wouldn't we back up and give him an underneath route?

similarly why would we have Gamble giving a 10 yd cushion when the Saints have it at about the 15 (?) on 3rd and 2?

this sh't makes no f'g sense to me.
