Before the draft, I thought we should draft defense all day on day 1. Mainly safety, which is still an issue and alot of discussion can be had about that.

But I just realized how talent loaded our defense is, and how we grew it within:

1st rounders:

Peppers
Lewis ( free agent, backup )
Morgan
Beason
Davis
Gamble

2nd Rounders:

Rucker
Jenkins
Marshall
Lucas ( Free agent )
Minter

OTHER:

Kemo, undrafted, Free agent
Salley, 4th rounder

Of the current starters, only 2 are Free agents, Lucas and Kemo. I am presuming Diggs will not start.

Of the key backups, We drafted marshall / Gamble, McGlover / Johnson, Morehead, Seward, Anderson. The free agents are all role players.

The only real busts on day 1 under these guys was Ellison. Manning is gone, but he was a good player while here.

Without knowing this, it was obvious defense was our strength.

A few moves in the draft made our offense much more home grown - but still reflects failures in drafting offensive players, particularly LINEMEN.

1st rounders on offense:

Gross
D. Williams (backup)

2nd rounders:

Kalil ( I project as starter )
Foster ( some might call a bust - never 1000 yards )
Jarret
Colbert (bust )
Shelton (bust )
*Also busted on Bruce Nelson
That's 3 second round busts, maybe 4.

3rd rounders:

Smitty
Mathis ( bust? )
Wharton
Butler ( hopeful )
*Also busted on Seidman

Hoover, Goings, were undrafted, while our top 3 RB's were drafted in rounds 1 and 2. We have a 7th rounder at TE.

Key free agents starting - only Wahle was a high pick:

Wahle 2nd rounder, FA
Delhomme ( undrafted )
Bridges ( 6th rounder maybe starter )
Hartwig ( 6th rounder maybe starter )

Anyway - I'm very happy with the draft. While I think Fox's tenure has succeeded in drafting defensively, they have failed drafting offensively, and the results show it.

The combination of drafting a WR ( our entire WR corps is homegrown ), snagging Kalil and dumping Henning could really pay off.

we just gotta keep getting those picks good and colbert may be a bust but he did have a good rookie year and has the type of smile that you want to see

so is nelson done?

He hasn't stepped on a field since 2003, his rookie year, due to hip problems. He never fully recovered from surgery to repair torn labrums in both hips. I expect that an expert such as yourself knew that. What, in your expert opinion, does that mean about the likelyhood of his continuing a NFL career?

Fox comes from a defensive background so it should not surprise anyone that he puts more value on building a defense than an offense.

We have actually been lucky on offense. We had no starting QB when Fox got here. He found a guy who was a low level free agent and got a pro bowler. Add to that Steve Smith blossomed into an elite wide out. If neither of those things happen Fox is probably gone by now.

Good points. It's time for some home grown offensive players to SHINE.

I'm counting on Kalil, Jarrett, and Williams to really become fixtures here.

youre obviously lost when it comes to knowing a single thing about the game of football

it means that he could get new hips and play again but i admit that it will be difficult because hips dont lie

That reminds me, I need to stop at the hip store on the way home.
