LB's of the future?

We're basically running the scrap heap back there. Diggs and Draft aren't much of an answer. Morgan is done.

Are these 3 gonna be the guys?

Morgan is done.
Surprise, surprise. Dan's out for Sun.

1:08 pm | Dan Morgan is out for Sunday's game

Carolina middle linebacker Dan Morgan, recovering from a concussion suffered in the season opener, missed practice again today, and is listed as out for Sunday’s game on the team’s injury report.

“He seems to be doing fine, just talking to him,” Panthers coach John Fox said. “He’s working out, he’s involved, he’s in meetings, he’s doing everything that all the injured guys are doing.”

Fox said he could not put a target date on Morgan’s return.

In addition to Morgan, tight end Mike Seidman (knee) is listed as out for Sunday. Three more players didn’t practice Wednesday and are questionable for the game—center Justin Hartwig (groin), offensive tackle Todd Fordham (shoulder) and safety Shaun Williams (foot).

Running back Nick Goings (thigh), cornerback Ken Lucas (neck) and wide receiver Steve Smith (hamstring) all practiced and are listed as probable.

Davis is. In the off chance that TD moves weakside, Anderson isn't, otherwise, he is.

I believe Seward's a better fit outside. I stated that before he got pushed inside by Anderson. Might mean he stays a backup. Dunno, but he looked good enough with the 1s in preseason.

Either way, IMO, I'd look at a sturdy two-down ILB with a little speed in the 2nd or 3rd this upcoming, unless they want to push Seward back into a starting role. I'd be fine with that, because I don't think his play inside was indicative of what he has to bring. Either way, Draft is FA. I believe Diggs is. And Ciurciu is. Gotta come up with some sort of vet presence there, because it won't be Morgan.

Hartwig's contract was actually pretty reasonable, and I thought it was aggressive to have him out there so soon after hernia surgery anyway.

As for the thread question, I do not currently believe that Seward will be a long-term starter for us. He has shown enough to stick with the team, but we need someone smarter and tougher in the middle. He'd be an option at SLB if Davis wasn't playing there, but mags is correct about what the drafting of Anderson likely means on that count. It's too early to say anything definitively, but I think that the first three games have shown exactly why I thought Davis was a poor fit at SLB, but we're stuck with it now. Anderson seems like a keeper at WLB, which means that the upgrade, if there is going to be one, has to come at MLB.

I think Seward could turn into a starter. I don't see a problem with his toughness. He seems to be a good tackler. He definatly needs to get smarter but I think that could come with experience.

I think that's the number one reason he's not out there right now is his ability to read and react. He got turned around and became confused a number of times. I don't think draft is the athlete that Seward is but he's got the experience.

Who knows, I'd love to see Morgan come back and suddenly go injury free for the rest of his career but that is about as likely as Fox calling me to play ILB.

By tougher I meant someone who is willing and able to fill a hole. Seward is no wimp, but the tackles he does make seem to be more of the downfield variety. I just don't think he's talented enough to be a long-time starter with our other LBs so iffy. In fact, we all seem to have assumed far too much about his ability based on a couple of solid preseason performances. If you go by his performance in regular season games, there isn't much at all to get excited about, although I have to admit that the same is true about Thomas Davis.
