I formally retract my statement about Morgan being a bust.

Morgan is not a bust. He is a BEAS.

He showed great burst in the hole. Once he diagnosed where the play was going, he beat the Colt backs to the punch.

We need that kind of playmaking and speed from our linebackers, we miss it with Feilds gone. A healthy Morgan is impactful, that part isn't debateable.

Witherspoon had a nice game too.

Most of Morgan's injuries, or at least two that I can remember, came at the end of seasons.
I think it really pisses him off to be off the field. And we're seeing that.

Of course, I was thinking about Burton while answering something tonight somewhere else. It seems like Morgan plays better behind him - which makes sense. That's the only problem with this D...one gap means having linebackers who have to stay in gaps, who have to be ready to fill those holes. That's why Baltimore had so much success with two gap - you keep fast, raw linebackers from getting guards on them.

And Burton brings that. Burton really did a good job, and took up guys. Buckner gets free sometimes, but I'd rather my linebackers be doing that.

I don't know. I'm not saying I want Burton to start, necessarily. Buckner's a very good football player. But Burton may be better for this defense, i.e. better for Morgan to stay on the field. Note two games Burton's played a lot of, Morgan's played like a freaking beast.

Did I miss something?

What I saw on Sunday was Morgan making a LOT of stops between the guards, but that was about it. He was not flying around as much as he was in the JAX game, where he was making tackles all over the place like he was the only LB on the field. It seemed to me like he was assigned a specific area of responsibility -- the interior -- and that was his job. Maybe to save the hammy? I dunno. But he did that job pretty well. Not spectacularly well, but well enough. No big plays, just solid tackling and reads.

And if he can stay healthy for more than one game, then I'll reconsider his bust status.

Apparently.

He made several stops on the outside, most of those he just got an assist though.


And I'd call stopping a back for negative loss on 3rd and 1 late in the game a big play.

Yep, have to agree with Piper on this one. I know a few times Morgan either had the tackle or assist on the outside close to the out of bounds and the LB for that side was nowhere to be seen. Now I don't know for sure if on those plays the OLB has coverage on a TE or what, but just my observation.

Morgan, please stay healthy, we need that oh so bad!

Our D with Pep, Rucker, Morgan, getting Fields back, Manning and a few others has to be a pretty quick team in reaction to the ball.

I might have to go to the tape for this, but I think it was Ricky Williams in the flats caught the ball where Morgan knock the shit, ball and everything rolled out of bounds. Morgan gets no tackle, maybe a PD, but that was a big play in the making without Morgan all over it.
