I'd put Rivera at or near the top of the list. I'm not sure he actually deserved it in '13 or '15. He deserves consideration this year. No coach has had to deal with more non-football fuckery. Not only has he dealt with it, he's managed to get this team to overperform in the midst of it This has been a beast ass performance by the Ice Bull.
Belichick deserves true consideration. The team I saw in September looked like an 8-8 club. Some of the flashy free agents have been more name than game. The injuries haven't mattered. They've managed to turn it around, like they always do. Can't deny the greatness anymore.
Payton should get credit for changing that team into a real football team, although he's done it with a lot of new young talent. Micky Loomis is my Executive of the Year (close between him and John Lynch, who I have to begrudgingly admit looks like a Superstar exec.)
Andy Reid has done an underrated job keeping that ship above water. Eric Berry was a catastrophic injury. Alex Smith is nowhere near as good as his stat line indicates. They have one good wide receiver. He deserves a little love this year.
John Harbaugh has a terrible quarterback. Aside from an injury-cucked 5-11 season in '15, he's kept that franchise above water during some unusually poor years by Ozzie Newsome. He's still one of the NFL's great head coaches.
I'm not sure about Doug Marrone. Part of Jacksonville's sudden success has a lot to do with the fact that Gus Bradley was a terrible HC. Marrone is competent. I don't think he's "good". The one thing he's done well is that he coaches that team EXACTLY how they should be coached. He definitely knows the strengths and weaknesses of his own roster.
McVay deserves major consideration. Wade Phillips was a great hire. He's turned Goff around in ways that I didn't imagine possible. The hyperbole about him being the new Bill Walsh is a little ridiculous, and they have a top 10 roster, but he's definitely a top candidate.
