Is it possible, when making your own connectors, to fuck up where it works but the speed/bandwidth is not optimum?

My office is noticably slower than the others. I've been thinking of re-splicing.

what kind of connection are you trying to run? gigabit ethernet takes all 4 pairs, whereas 100/10 just take 2 pairs.

The entire pathway needs to be correctly wired for optimum speed. A cable analyzer can tell you if you have issues in seconds. Without proper connectors (they are rated as well), Cat 5/6 cable can be wasted. Same thing with the patch panels and such. And if you have Cat 6 in the wall but a cat 3 patch cable from the wall to your PC, that's not groovy. And if you straighten out the wires before crimping on the connector, that can be very bad. Finally, if you run the cables over lights or power sources, you can generate a lot of badness.

In short, YES.
