Hell of a short shuttle for a 290 lb'er. I could give a damn about his 40 time...the quickness it takes to run that drill in 4.19 is what makes a good DE.

from GBN "Nebraska’s Adam Carriker, for example, only ran in the 4.9 range over 40 yards, but the 292-pounder blitzed the short shuttle in a LB-like 4.19 seconds."

What was his 10 yard split on the 40? Good or fair, not the number, which doesnt mean anything to me. That's a better number for a DE.

40s are important for DBs and LBs, because they really do have to run those to play pass coverage.

has he done something on the field that's remarkable that you'd have drafted him in the first before the combine?
If people don't think 40 times are a reason to give you a big bump, I really don't think getting an anomaly in short shuttle time is one to go crazy about either. It's not as if the quarterback is going to be 20 yards away, and you only get the sack if you down him and then run back to where you were.

It might mean he's got rapid acceleration, sure. I've never seen the first step in him, the body lean, or anything else that would say it'd really help him get past a tackle to where that burst would be monumental, though.

How about the ability to track down a RB in the backfield, while pursuing from the backside? Or moving down the line on a sweep from the backside...

Having the quickness to protect the edge against Vick on those naked bootlegs.

all while having the power to be able to standup to the power running game.

The combination of size and quickness, while maybe not a Freeny explosive first step, is an interesting combination.

I've never studied him, so those who have are way ahead of me, but the initial impression of his measurables is intriguing, given our need at DE.

again, one shuttle being good without his measurables overall being standout, doesn't suggest athleticism anymore than it does anomaly. Plus, when's it ever stood out on the field? If he was a good rusher in college, that'd be different (he did have 9.5 in 05), but at 14 overall you don't want a big white kid whose main attributes include the word "motor" and also consistently includes the words "not a natural pass rusher." He certainly didn't look like it in college.

He had a good bench (33). His change of direction does, in fact, look good. He'll be a good player. I just don't think he's elite.

Mags, you've watched him a heck of alot more than I have so I'll defer to you. But the kids NOT a Mitch Marrow or even Hugh Douglas. He's been a first round projection all year.

I think to be considered a workout warrior, you have to work out better than 4.9. I don't think he's being confused with Jevon Kearse.

He's not a bad player. He's solid, and has a lot of positive intangibles. Top 15, I look for more than just that.
