Canon Zoom Lens

I'm looking for a decent zoom lens...Here are a couple lenses I'm looking into at the moment...

Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM
Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM Zoom Lens

I like but little out of the range
85mm/1.8 USM
100mm/2.0 USM


I can't afford the IS lenses so those aren't even options...



I want to take some sports shots at night and day. Along with some landscape and city shots (night also). An array of portraits....

Which one of those would you guys recommend as an over all...

I'm swinging more toward the 28-105

I bought the 75-300 and returned it. I was really unhappy with the image quality and the chromatic distortion. I don't have any experience with the 28-105. I do have the 28-135, which I love, but it's got IS and like you said, is a couple hundred dollars more.

if you're shooting at night, you'll be disappointed with the top two lenses.

you could buy the 50mm 1.8 for your night stuff.

being really unknowledgeable on all this, why are the two top lenses worse?

The Aperture on both is relatively slow (F4 - F3.5 repsectivly and even slower on the long end). The primes are faster (allow more light through them) so they're better suited for low light situations.
