This is somewhat of a shocker. Why wasn't this picked up before his stroke?

According to a broadcast report, Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi has landed back in the hospital and is scheduled for surgery related to the mild stroke he suffered last month.

Television station KOLD of Tucson is reporting that Bruschi will undergo a procedure to repair a hole in his heart.
The Patriots would neither confirm nor deny the report to the Boston Globe, saying all information would have to come directly from the Bruschi family.

Three days after playing in the Pro Bowl last month, Bruschi was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital after reportedly suffering persistent headaches, blurred vision and numbness on his right side. He was released from the hospital after two days.

At the time, a team source told the Globe that Bruschi was found to have a leaking blood vessel in his brain and his football future was in doubt.

One of my bosses had a stroke and during the MANY tests they ran, they found a tiny hole in the back of her heart and it's apparently not very uncommon. They had to run further tests and I can't remember what they were or what they were supposed to tell the docs, but it may be that they've known about the hole for a while and were just finishing up tests etc. There were other tests my boss had to go through AFTER they found the hole to clarify whether it needed to be fixed or not. Both her cardiologists said from the outcome of those tests they would NOT fix the holes if it was them and she didn't.
