Miami just cut him loose. Is he a free safety? Would be better than Grant? I know he is old and all but if Grant wants too much money.....

He has lost a step and if we want speed then we need to keep grant and/or draft one of a few fast rook saftey projects.

Maybe I am too hard on him but I have never been much of a fan of Grant's. I can not think of much good he has done but I can think of a couple of games he flat out lost for us. I would be reluctant to give him a big pay day. I would rather give that money to a corner and plug in an average free safety from free agency.

I don't like the sound of acquiring "an average free safety" since IMO Grant improved to be above average and a downgrade at a starting spot would be a big no-no. I thought it was pretty clear that especially over the second half of the season Deon played better and certainly did not lose any games for us that I'm aware of.

Couple of good ones

Grant actually made a couple of dandy plays that I can recall. One was on fourth down to seal the victory against Washington as he knocked the ball away from L. Coles. He also took a pass away from Crumpler of Atlanta to put the Panthers in position to tie -- and perhaps win again in OT -- but that one did not turn out too well. Unfortunately, the play he did NOT make in the Super Bowl, when he had the chance to turn what looked like a sure interception into a TD, counts against him.

I am not very optamistic that we will be able to keep Grant. I hope we can just like I would like to keep most if not all our guys.

Sometimes a Super Bowl run will make you feel obligated to pay these guys more then they are worth because of the "they were good enough to get to the super bowl" crap. Eitherway I am ok with Grant for the right cash, I am just not sure we will be able to agree with him on what the "right cash" is.

Unfortunately, I think you are probably right about that.

I wasn't saying that we should be reckless in re-signing Grant. I am just really surprised that I haven't heard anything about our guys even talking to the man about re-signing him <period>. You would think that at the very least our staff would have made some mention that they would like to retain Grants services . . . even if behind closed doors they discussed only doing it for a moderate price.

Brock's too slow for what we want. Our safties need some range to play as much zone as we do.

Grant looks like the top Unrestricted Free Agent Safety this year. I don't think he'll be back. But guys like Rodger Beckett have had some of the same problems, with less production.

Maybe our defensive minds are thinking that there is a guy already on our roster who will be a good replacement for Grant. Is it at all possible that behind closed doors Wesley or maybe even Branch could be penciled in as the new starter? I know that there has not been anything to date to support that. Branch is more of a SS and has barely seen the field so far so I guess it’s extremely unlikely to see him start at FS by opening day, but Wesley might be another story.
I'm not saying plausible here, just possible . . . at least with Wesley's continued development in mind. He hasn't seemed to fit at corner but he has talent and they could be seriously considering molding him into a FS.

That is what I read about aWesley when we drafted him. He would probably be a safety in the NFL. He is plenty fast for a safety.
