Bobcats will get Cavaliers' No. 1 pick

Team awaits word on trade of Steve Smith

RICK BONNELL

Staff Writer

Regardless of whether the Cleveland Cavaliers make the NBA playoffs, they will send their first-round pick to the Charlotte Bobcats in June.

Bobcats coach/general manager Bernie Bickerstaff said Thursday morning the Cavaliers took their contingency off that pick Wednesday night. Apparently, the Cavaliers are involved in trade discussions that would include a future first-round pick and couldn't consummate that deal if the pick they owe the Bobcats was open-ended.

With the NBA's 3 p.m. trade deadline looming, the Bobcats were waiting to hear back from the Miami Heat concerning guard-forward Steve Smith. The Heat has inquired about Smith, 35, and Smith is receptive to going there, but the Heat would have to clear a roster spot in order to absorb Smith's contract from the Bobcats.

The Bobcats would only be interested in swapping Smith for a future draft pick, not a Heat player.

Huzzah. I wouldn't mind seeing them pick up a first rounder for Smith, but I dunno if that's going to happen.

• Smith said he'd be interested in playing for the Heat, if it has a real role for him (as opposed to being insurance against an injury).

The Heat's flexibility to acquire Smith might hinge on whether Miami could trade Wesley Person to open a roster spot.

Person-to-Charlotte probably wouldn't be a logical option for the Bobcats.

Smith said if he were traded, he'd love to eventually return to Charlotte, with some position in the Bobcats organization.

"I hope so," he said. "I've always liked this place from Day 1. It's always been a good city in an area of the country where I chose to live."

Smith's family is nearby in Atlanta.

Unfortunately, they didnt get a pick but a scrub. I guess it was more a favor to Smith to get him chance at a title.

Now that theres a 2nd contender in the east though...(Phila)...

This be interesting now.
