Bobcats Radio Contract is Up

It was a 3 year deal with MIX106, if I remember correctly. Is anybody else in the mix for the contract (i.e. WFNZ/WFNA)? Or is it MIX106's to lose?

Bobcats have one more season (07-08) on Mix106.

The Bobcats have very few options. WFNZ has a long term contract with the Tar Heels and I am sure WFNA will continue to carry UNC Charlotte...

It will be interesting to see what will happen at WBT if they are sold. The hot rumor is Cox would buy the LFC radios stations. Cox stations carry NBA teams in other markets and may be more willing to deal with the Bobcats than the current management.

I have heard that Davidson is shopping around for a station to carry their basketball games and Appalachian State just became an ISP school. Both will be bringing their checkbooks and will have to be willing to spend to make the air in this very limited marketplace...Also look for Clemson and South Carolina to make a play as well with the demise of WAGI (105.3 FM)...

Some Davidson games aired on WFNA and some aired on WFNZ. I think Davidson would like to be on a station that would have them as the first priority. With 610/1660 they are bumped or moved if the Tar Heels or 49ers are playing...

Davidson is also in no mans land when it comes to AM stations except WBT. You can not hear WFNZ or WFNA in Davidson at night. Last year WEGO in Concord carried all of the games but you can't hear them in Davidson at night either.

I think they would like to be on an FM station.

OK, I thought it was just a 3 year deal. Bobcats don't have many options unless another radio station comes on the air in the next year or so.

SDS...

I apologize. I was told last night that the Bobcats did have a 3 year deal with Mix106. It is unknown where they will be next season...

I was told before the season was over that it was thought that they would be back on Mix106 but that is not confirmed. I will nose around and see what I can find out...

Hmmmmmmm, I'm sure there has to be some interest in the Bobcats (at least a little bit). WFNZ/WFNA would be too logical, but they have too much on their plate already (NASCAR/Knights/Tar Heels/49ers) to even think about adding 82 Bobcats game to their lineup . . .

SDS...

Remember...of the 4 (NASCAR/Knights/Tar Heels/49ers) NASCAR is the only one not paying CBS to be on the air. In the case of NASCAR CBS pays MRN and PRN to air their programming.

NASCAR is the only sports programming that stations in our market would bid for now. Who knows how long that will last.

If the Bobcats are going to make the air they are going to have to pay. That is the current business model. Stations only care about how much they are going to make.
