Bears Release Marcus Robinson

LAKE FOREST, IL - The Chicago Bears released wide receiver Marcus Robinson today. He played in 52 games over his five-year career in Chicago with 28 starts.
Robinson owns the Bears record for receiving yards in a season with the 1,400 compiled on a career-high 84 catches in his breakout season of 1999. The South Carolina product ranks 16th in team history with 187 receptions and 19th with 2,695 receiving yards. Robinson recorded seven career 100-yard receiving games in his five seasons in Chicago.

The Bears fourth-round draft pick (108th overall) in 1997 missed his entire rookie season with a thumb injury. He had an outstanding season with the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe in spring of 1998. Robinson led the Fire to a World Bowl victory while earning NFLE Offensive MVP honors. He returned to Chicago that fall, but played in only three games, grabbing four catches for 44 yards and a touchdown. He ranked among the league's elite in 1999 when he caught a career-high nine touchdown passes and posted five single-game receiving outputs of over 135 yards. Robinson was on pace for his second consecutive 1,000-yard receiving campaign the next year, but a back injury ended his season after 11 games.

The Ft. Valley, Ga., native returned from his back injury in the Bears playoff season in 2001, hauling in 114 receiving yards in just his third game back, but suffered a season-ending knee injury in the fifth game of the year. Robinson played all 16 games for the second time in his career in 2002, including two starts, and caught 21 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns.

*With Dyson, Proehl, Muhamid, Smith and Byrd would we even consider this guy? I'd be interested in him for real cheap myself.

I'd consider him post draft. if we don't get a guy, we can still use a long term player.

I would take a look at him post draft too. He may never be the same player he was a few years ago but he would give us good depth. Last year was terrible for depth at WR. Maybe this year we can avoid playing so many scrubs even if have some injuries.

well, if we don't get anyone in the draft, whether we deal Steve or not, we've got one receiver under contract long term, and he's older than Biletnikoff. Getting a younger receiver in on a two year deal gives us another body to evaluate. At worst, we have a good backup, at best he comes back and outmuscles people for a job.

I don't expect we will, and it's not a huge need, but it's also smart business and not out of the question in value.

I know something he can do. He can play phenomenally for about 5 games a season, then his back puts him in IR.

If we had a WR play phenominaly if only for 5 games it would be 5 more games than we had played at that level since Jeffers one and only healthy year with us.
