Based on what I have...

Here are the players I am thinking about based on our picks and where I have guys rated at this time. No particular order...


1st Round/Pick #14:
*Troy Williamson WR South Carolina - Somewhat raw prospect from a run based offense. Good Speed.
* Mark Clayton WR Oklahoma - Well-rounded WR, decent blocker. Can haul in the most difficult passes
* Alex Barron OT FSU - Solid o-lineman, but could have a similar player later.
* Khalif Barnes OT Washington - Bruiser, most have him rated lower, but I feel he is the better OT of the class.
* Caddy Williams RB Auburn - Lots of variation as to which RB well slip this far and if one will. Williams is a solid runner between the tackles.
* Heath Miller TE Virginia - Tallented athlete, but we don't use the TE enough to warrant this selection.
* Shawne Merriman LB/DE Maryland - Probably better suited for a 3-4 D.
* Carlos Rogers CB Auburn - Lucas signing negates the need.
* Thomas Davis FS/SS/LB Georgia - Soured on him of late, like his abilities...just not sure where the hell he fits best?


2nd Round/Pick #45:
* Charlie Frye QB Akron - Could use some mentoring, might not be a bad choice for a future star
* Eric Shelton RB Louisville - I love big backs, and this guy is definately big! Nice compliment to Foster if we plan to retain him.
* Alex Smith TE Stanford - Solid TE in all phases of the game, probably could improve as a blocker.
* Jerome Mathis WR Hampton - Good hands and speed, although slight at 180 pnds.
* Chris Spencer C/G Ole Miss -Gritty, intelligent interior lineman.
* Josh Bullocks FS Nebraska - Good range, solid combine improved his stock
* Ernest Shazor FS/SS Michigan - A monster hitter with good instincts
* Brodney Pool FS Oklahoma - Always in the vacinity. Big heady pass defender
* Odell Thurman LB Georgia - Could play inside or out, possible replacement for the oft injured Morgan
* Darryl Blackstock LB Virginia - Plays with controled intensity, could be a diamond in the ruff.



3rd Round/Pick #79:
* JJ Arrington RB Cal - Another player who could be a diamond in the ruff
* JR Russell WR Louisville - Lanky WR with the ability to go get the ball in traffic.
* Chris Kemoeatu OG Utah - Nasty boy interior lineman. Charater issues.
* Ben Wilkerson C/G LSU - see above minus the character issues
* Jonathan Babineaux DT Iowa - Smallish DT, similar in many ways to Moorehead. Probably a situational DE as well.
* Ronald Fields DT Miss State - Based on what I have read, he could develop into a superstar. Will need time to develop
* Jovan Haye DE Vanderbilt - Solid pass rusher, not to sure about his ability against the run
* Darrent Williams CB Okie State - Solid cover corner with decent speed. Not a great tackler.
* Junior Rosegreen FS/SS Auburn - Still an upgrade over Branch w/ room to develop
* Vincent Fuller FS Va Tech - Good upside, could be considered a little raw.

I've been thinking a lot about drafting Derrick Johnson the LB from Texas recently.

People keep saying "we don't use TE enough." But is that set in stone? If we had Shockey or Gonzales, would we still not use them? I find it hard to believe the OC is utterly incapable of adjusting to strengths.

Heath Miller is the biggest upgrade based on our roster, IMO, but I wouldn't be crying with some of the others on your list either.

they tried to make Wesley Walls a blocker when he was here... so it shouldn't be so hard to believe

Walls was at the very end of his career when Fox got here. He did not do much in Green Bay playing with Favre. Henning did not mind using Clint Diddier back in the day.

Hey it's not us. It's Henning. He's said he just doesn't use the tight end a lot in his offense. I wish he did. I think it would help Delhomme a lot. I'd love to see Miller become to Delhomme what Walls was to Beuerline - but I'm not holding my breath.

Yep. Last year, they said that Mangum's 30+ catches were a rarity for an offense.


Damndest thing, after all these years of having one of the best TEs, and it'll be years before we even try again. This team has an odd way of not trying for some things.

No particular order, I'd take Clayton over Williamson based on experience alone. I've seen Williamson going ahead of Williams on a couple mocks...which is assinine. Honestly, I might consider Roddy White over Williamson, but Williamson has a little more potential IMO.
Potential is all to often lost though.
