Any Home Networking gurus?

I've got two PC's.

One runs Win XP, the other runs Win ME. The ME PC is very underpowered, so upgrading the OS is not an option.

I've connected the two PCs each up to a hub via ethernet cables.

What's the next step? Time is of the essence here gurus, I'll check back throughout the next day.

You trying to copy files between the 2? It's easier to make a share on the ME and map a drive from the XP.

make sure they both have similar IP adresses.
You can use something as simple as 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2. And give them both a subnet mask. Easiest is 255.255.255.0

Then do what math said.

What else do I need to do? Should I just return the hub and get a crossover cable?

There is a wizard in XP for sharing data between PCs, just run it and rock and roll. If it's not working, tell us what the problem is...
Sounds like the basics are good. Firewall on might cause issues, internet connection sharing on might cause issues, etc., but you should have basic connectivity with what you described...

Make sure you got the same user name and password set up on each PC, too. Gotta have rights.

The Win ME machine has been replaced at this point.

I've got two user names set up on each PC, both with the same password.

All four logins (two on each PC) are set for Admin.

I still can't see the other PC, can anyone help?

Can you ping?

And if you're trying to map a drive or something, you need to know the share names. If the users are administrators, for simplicity, map to \\computername\c$

Yeah I can ping from one PC to the other.

I've scrapped the hub and bought a crossover cable.

How do I "map" drives, and where would I "see" the other PC?
