Several tiebreakers could come into play Sunday when the ACC determines the seeds for the ACC Tournament in Greensboro. Here's a look at how they should work out if this week's games go as projected:
* If Wake Forest beats N.C. State Saturday in Winston-Salem to tie both teams at 11-5, the Wolfpack would claim the second seed -- as long as North Carolina doesn't finish ahead of Georgia Tech in the standings.
The tiebreaker in this case is complicated. Wake and N.C. State would have split head-to-head and both would have split with No. 1 Duke. The Pack finished 2-0 vs. Georgia Tech, but 0-2 vs. UNC. The Deacs were 1-1 against each team.
If UNC finishes fourth, then Wake gets the second seed on the basis of its better record against the Heels. If Georgia Tech finishes fourth, N.C. State wins the second seed. And if UNC and Georgia Tech tie (as now seems likely), both N.C. State and Wake Forest would be 2-2 against the two and the tiebreaker moves down to Maryland. Both State and Wake would be 2-0 against the Terps in this scenario. Florida State is where N.C. State gets a clear win on the basis of its 2-0 record against the Seminoles.
* North Carolina and Georgia Tech could easily tie at 8-8, assuming both win at home this week and lose at Duke. If that happens, the Tar Heels would be seeded fourth on the basis of their sweep of N.C. State -- however, since this tiebreaker is between No. 4 and No. 5, basically all it means is that the Heels get to wear white in their Friday quarterfinal matchup with the Jackets.
* Maryland and Florida State could end up tied at 6-10. If this happens, the Seminoles would earn the No. 6 seed on the basis of their victory over Wake Forest. That means a likely quarterfinal matchup with Wake Forest, while the Terps would have to take on N.C. State in Friday's quarterfinals.
Virginia is the one team that can most easily mess up these scenarios. The red-hot Cavaliers can drop Maryland into Thursday night's play-in game with a victory Sunday night in College Park. But an upset of Wake Forest tonight would do little to change things -- in a 3-way tie with FSU and Maryland at 6-10, the Cavs would lose the tiebreakers and still end up as the No. 8 seed -- in the play-in game.
And a Wake Forest loss at Virginia would merely mean that the Pack could clinch the second seed with a homecourt victory over Maryland.
