These comments are very interesting to me in terms of Panthers brass Q&A...
John Fox on how signing Jake Delhomme and re-signing Rodney Peete affects drafting a quarterback: I think the steps we have taken up until now have just protected us and I think are good moves. Anytime you are dealing with a rookie quarterback, ideally, I would prefer to bring in a young quarterback with some veteran guys in front of him to tutor him and get him ready to play in the National Football League. The steps we have taken up until now, I don't think that will affect whether we do or don't take a quarterback out of the draft.
~Interesting - especially considering Delhomme is signed for only 2 yrs.
Jack Bushofsky on the depth of the draft: If you need a quarterback, this is the time to get him because you have anywhere between three and six quarterbacks that have a good chance of going in those first couple of rounds. Then, I think receiver is at the top. There is a nice quality grouping of receivers in the fourth or fifth round, possibly even in the third round. Corners I think are the same way. You have the top two guys and then you have a good group in the middle, the third, fourth or fifth round. You have quality numbers there. Tight end and defensive tackle I think are strong. You have got a lot of numbers at DT. If you don't get a person in the first day, I think you can get a pretty good defensive tackle in the fourth or fifth round. Tight end, I wouldn't be shocked if seven or eight tight ends are drafted in the first day because you have some quality tight ends. I think the running back position is obviously scarce. You don't find 320 or 330-pound people walking the streets that can play offensive tackle. I think year in and year out there is always going to be a scarcity of big offensive tackles.
~Interesting as well. Again, QB is emphasized. Wait on WR till later? CB later if no Newman or Trufant? Gross isn't really a 320-330 pd tackle so waiting till second for Johnson, Pashos or Foster.
Those statements make me think Leftwich - especially if Newman and Trufant are gone. They are definately still considering the QB position in the first 2 rounds. No doubt.
