One review I read was NOT complimentary. The feeling the critic got is that Martin's "fire" for writing about this world is long gone. He is now just going through the motions. It is hard to argue with that opinion based on how long it has taken him to release this book.

Hopefully the success of the HBO series will get him motivated again to round out this tale.

I think the fire has been long gone as well. As for motivation, I think GRRM's motivation has been $$$, fan adulation and traveling to every book show on Earth for the last while. The writing part is consigned to "as the spirit moves him" in own words. If he finishes it on his own I'll be surprised. The only thing that could speed up releases are Publisher pressure or HBO wanting the last books done so production isn't halted down the road.

I just finished it. I think if I heard the phrase "He, she, they, is/was/were not wrong" once more I was gonna scream. Maybe those were in the 1st 4 but I didn't notice and I'm not sure I want to go back and read them. There seems to be no direction to the last book. Don't wanna add any spoilers yet, but the only possible end I can see is Daenerys sitting on the Iron throne with a dragon at her side, married to somebody like Tyrion Lannister.

the killing off of major characters is stupid. all i want to know now is how the entire saga ends. and fat old guy with hippy troll beard writing erotica is kida creepy.
