45 Man Roster

While I'm making my projected list, I first went looking for the emergency quarterback rule and found this from NFL.com

"7) There are some special rules about substitutions for quarterbacks, especially as pertains to replacing the starting QB who is not injured. What's the rule?

Each team is allowed to carry a third QB on their roster who is not part of their 45-man active roster. He may enter the game in an emergency situation if the first two QBs get hurt. If he enters anytime in the first three quarters, neither of the first two QBs can re-enter the game. If he enters in the fourth quarter, the original QBs can return to the game. The third QB can only enter the game in the QB position."

Naturally, when you're not counting K, P, and 3rd QB, you're talking about dressing two deep at each position plus one player. For sake of simplicity, you count Kyle as the 45th, so you start out with two deep everywhere.

If you keep more than two deep at any defensive position, you rarely dress that extra player unless he's specifically ST (like Kyle, if you count him as a LB, or Rasmussen last year as a ST specific player). 5th corner probably won't see any time in a year at all unless there's an injury, 7th LB, etc. 5th safety, same thing. So defensively, you keep 22 defenders active. Sometimes, with teams that don't rotate as much on DL, you keep 7. Or teams that have two every-down LBs, you keep 5 LB - a backup inside, a backup outside. We'll be heavy on the offensive side for ST players (choosing from amongst Wilkins, Hankton, Bates, Smart, at minimum that wouldn't be first or second string), where there isn't really anyone on the 3rd team D that we "have" to keep active for ST other than Kyle, who we already accounted for at 45.

So then you have 22 more offensive spots to choose from, 20 if you negate QB because you have to keep two QB.

Since we'll probably keep 8 or 9 OL, and dress 8 either way (maybe 7 in a pinch - Willig can backup all but C, Nelson could back up C/G), that's a spot for the 3rd RB and 5th WR, for instance. If we keep two FB, we might not activate both - especially if we keep playing two TE like in preseason. Some teams that use one TE and not much of the 2nd, use a backup OL as their goal line TE and don't activate the 3rd TE. Specifically what we'd do? Hell if I know.

That 5th WR, if we kept someone like Baker, would probably be Wilkins - not Baker. You keep Baker as depth, but even when we play 5 WR, chances are at least one of them's a back or TE (the idea with Henning's doing that is to isolate a WR, or spread the D out to do something different in running).



*Some guys on the competition committee, namely Vermiel (and I think Levy was all about this too, confirming that it's at least partly tied to ST-background coaches), want the team to do away with active/inactive and just let 53 play. Or keep 50, for instance, and make them all active. I like it, because in the salary cap times we have, you're not going to have as long to cultivate a young player - getting more rising backups into ST duty and reserve duty would really help.

I think they should keep the 53 and just let them all be active. What's the point of allowing 53, but only being able to play 45 any given game? You could have a rash of injuries and be screwed for thhat game if you were unlucky enough for it to happen at a particular position. Of course, that could be what 'strategery' is used for when gameplanning. But whatever, rules are rules, and there are a bunch of stupid rules in this life.

I can picture Seidman playing a role in this years offense. He has both blocked well and caught the ball. Using our TE as a sixth lineman, I think you have to give him the nod over Wiggins right now even though I wish it were over Mangum.

Personally, I would keep Willig active (plays T/G, where Nelson and Brzezinski can't/shouldn't) rather than DB, if you're keeping 7. Past that I'm a bit confused.

negate the QBs, Kyle, K/P, leaves me 42 to activate.

first two strings of DB (8) - D players kept: 21. Total - 42. Inactives: Brzezinski (may as well cut him), 5th CB and S, 6th LB, backup FB. Add back 3 QBs, Kyle, K, P and you have 53.


I had to sacrifice Wilkins for sake of numbers. Smith returns punts and doesn't touch any other ST unit. Returners are Bates, with Brown or Baker backing him. Cooper and Richardson are outside blockers (flanking Moorehead). Sacrifice the backup FB makes me a little anxious, but Goings isn't that great.

You trade Goings for Seidman which I can see but I can't see how your math allows for Brown or Moorehead?

And I'll edit the above to make the WR, RB easier to see.

Ah, I see the problem...you are negating the first and second string QBs. They count to the 45 man roster. It is only the 3rd string QB that doesn't.

Edited my roster to fit the news about Wilkins. Personally, I think they gave him a choice though I don't know why.

Yep. Since they were assumed, I put them and Kyle locked in and decided to work amongst 42 players left. Hope that helps. Makes it more confusing, though.
Yeah, Wilkins does change things immensely
