This is about what had been previously reported. We're not going to be in very good shape.

CROP REPORT SHOWS $5 MILLION INCREASE

On Wednesday afternoon, Clarence Beeks told the various Randolph and Mortimer Dukes that the NFL crop report will increase by roughly $5 million, from $80.5 million per team to $85.5 million.

The increase was first reported by the Dallas Morning News.

A league source told us that the teams also were told at the labor meetings in Dallas not to expect the cap to increase by much in 2006. We recently reported that some teams expect the cap to break $100 million in 2006, when the new TV deals kick in. But as Vito Stellino of the Florida Times-Union explained to us (correctly, it appears), there won't be a significant jump from '05 to '06. - PFT

We have an increase in the cap and not nearly the dead money we had before. Are we not going to be in good shape because of deals for Delhomme, Smitty, etc.?

The Panthers have $80 million committed toward a 2005 salary cap that should be around $85 million.

That's not much space, because there are 19 potential free agents (including restricted and exclusive rights) on the roster and the Panthers will need to keep some of them.

The Panthers currently have 22 players that aren't under contract for next season. Here's a look at the potential free agents:

Thats counting Moose's $12.0m, so either factor that gone. (one way or the other and we'll be just fine.

Unrestricted

LB Brian Allen (gone)

LB Jessie Armstead (gone)
RB Brandon Bennett (gone)

LB Mark Fields (Curious about this one)

S Curtis Fuller (gone)

WR Karl Hankton (another curious one)

DE Kavika Pittman (gone)

S Damien Richardson (gone  )

RB Rod Smart (gone)

S Travares Tillman (gone)

G Rich Tylski (gone -- may be saved if signed cheap as a backup C, but doubtful)

T Matt Willig (gone)

Restricted

T Dave Kadela (will be back and take Willig's old role if not a starting job.)

CB William Hampton (will be tendered)

DE Kemp Rasmussen (will be back)

WR Micah Ross (gone)

S Dante Wesley (will be back... notice he's now listed as a Safety)

LB Will Witherspoon (will be tendered 1st round)

Exclusive Rights

LB Vinny Ciurciu (back)

CB Eddie Jackson (back)

DT Omari Jordan (back)

DT Cleveland Pinkney (back)

Hell all exclusive guys will be back. I see a little fat getting trimmed at years end. Not much dead money. I think some younger blood has stepped up and we'll see some guys like Richardson and Pittman cut loose. Hankton possibly as well, but he's questionable. Smart has all but been replaced. Bennett was simply a stop gap. Armstead will only be brought back if he's at minimum. I think they draft a guy to take Allen's spot at LB. Fuller was a stop gap. Tillman has shown little of nothing and isn't worth resigning at higher pay. Willig and Tylski will probably be replaced with someone younger.

A little rough math

Disclaimer:

This is with just Moose's base salary

I have to recheck Nelson's bonus.

I have to recheck Carter's bonus.

And their's probably some dead money I'm not rememering.

Rashard Anderson was in his last year, I think Baker was too, Shaw will have some dead money beacuse I think he signed for 2 years, Tuten was a 1 year guy so nothing there, Claridge was 2 years so I think he'll hit us some, Poteat was in his last year so nothing there, and I'm unsure on Burton and Walker.
