    yep

giving up a #1 for Gilbert was retarded, but because we wanted that #1 for that year, we ended up giving up the 2 #1s...so we traded away our 2nd for a future #1 two years away (also awful value).

We followed up giving away two future #1s, by giving up a #1 to a tweener DL that didn't fit the 3-4, and adding another DL (that, coincidentally, was a great fit in Wiley), and then, you guessed it, another DL (a workout warrior, Marrow). That quartet of DL, along with the two tweener OLB the year before, and along with the ILB/Longsnapper in Jensen from later in 1998, were supposed to be the backbone of a future defense. I don't think more than 3 made it past the 2nd season.

It's sad when Donald Hayes and Damien Richardson are your best draft picks of a year.

Gilbert wouldn't have been such a bad player if he could've simply taken on a block v/s the run. He actually generated decent pass rush stats, just nothing near worth the contract he got. To this day, the only contract I can remember equaling Gilbert's was Peppers' rookie contract.

Yes, that was the one where Dom Capers overruled Dom Anile. Hard to top (or bottom) that draft. 2005 was poor, but at least most of those guys could arguably be backups. And Davis looks like he may be a player. Seward could be a good backup. 1998, OTHO, was just ridiculous. Wiley is a decent backup player, and Peter could have been something, I guess, but most of the others were questionable as street FAs.

Peter was a crack head. He had the ability to be decent if not for that. I can see where Capers would have missed it. Wiley was not bad just not much of a pass rusher.

Like I said before though that draft was crap all around. Only a handful of guys from that draft made it. If not for Peyton Manning at the top of the draft it would have really been awful.

Peter wasn't a good fit for LDE and I didn't like him there. I didn't think he could play DT in the NFL, but if we were one gap, he maybe could've stuck there.

He'd have been more healthy had he not tried to play at 290.

Wiley was a good fit for the 3-4. I liked him, and he was an able runstopper at DE that got a lot of flak for not getting sacks. Hayes did what he needed to, I guess, and so did Richardson. What a shitty draft, though. In no way was Capers ever supposed to have that power, and nice job signing him "for life" while trying it out.

That asshole, Ed Hardin, warned that the Gilbert deal would doom the Panthers for five years. He was right, but I can't stand Hardin.

He was also right abuot the 1-15 season. God I hate him.

You're right as usual Thelt, there weren't any guys that would have been better choices for the Panthers

    14. Jason Peter-Vonnie Holliday, Randy Moss, and Donovan Darius still on the board

    62. Chuck Wiley-Olin Kreutz, Jeremiah Trotter still on the board

    73. Mitch Marrow-Ahman Green, Brian Griese, and Hines Ward still on the board

    106. Donald Hayes-Jason Fabini, Tim Dwight, Deshea Townsend, and Lance Schulters still on the board

    136. Jerry Jensen-Benji Olsen and Ike Reese still on the board

    165. Damien Richardson-Matt Birk, Fred Beasley, and Matt Hasselbeck still on the board

    196. Vilami Maumau-Ephraim Salaam, Chris Liwienski, Eric Warfield, and Pat Tillman still on the board

    228. Jim Turner-probably some undrafted guys that were out there that could have given us something

I don't think Thelt was suggesting that we couldn't have done better, just that it was a weak draft overall and a lot of teams didn't do well. I actually agree with him.

the 1998 draft desperately needed us to draft some OL.
