working on a laptop

    i found an older laptop...

    it has cd/rw dvd rom... i cant get it to burn a cd or watch a dvd ...

    when i use media player i can listen to a music cd... when i try playing a dvd... it shows the title all the different channels for the movie and starts playing.. only problem is i dont see any video or hear any sound... HELP!!!!

    Any suggestions what i need to check.. ive went to the manufacturer's website and d/l new drivers and stuff....

    Install codecs. Have you done a complete Windows Update?

    yes on the updates...

    also on the codecs. someone had them on a website i d/l and installed...
    i guess they were correct... where else would i get them?

    divx.com will give you the most common codec, but other than that it's Google time.

    if you have more than cd burning or dvd watching programs installed, then there may be a driver conflict

    search the programs folder for another application

    I installed power dvd to watch dvd's.... still dont know why i couldnt view a dvd on windows media player.

    Media Player doesn't come with an MPEG2/4 decoder, which you need for DVD playback.
    Installing PowerDVD and the like usually not only puts their player in place, but puts the correct codec in place to decode a DVD in media player...try it (doesn't always, haven't tried powerdvd myself).

    yeah,, it didnt help with media player, but thats ok.. the owner of the laptop seems happy using Power DVD...
    I'M NOT GONA FRET OVER IT ANYMORE..
