I just got a new PC running XP pro. I was messing around with trying to set up a home network. At one point, when I got the logon box, it had a username, password and domain text box. I was able to logon just fine, then I messed around with some settings (perhaps dealing with the domain name), and now when I get the logon box, the domain text box does not appear, and I cannot logon to the machine. a message box appears after I enter my password that says the system could not log you on. Make sure your username and domain are correct. Am I screwed (meaning I will have to reinstall the os), or is there a solution?

If there's no 'domain' option, then use a local user ID, like 'administrator'. If you never set a password, then just hit the enter key.

I tried administrator, and get the same message. I even have a cd called ERD commander 2002 from winternals that will allow me to go in thru a "locksmith" option and change the password on accounts. I have done this, and still cannot get any of the accounts to logon...

We used to have a problem with a logoff script that came into play when we changed the computer name. There are (at least) 2 registry entries that have to have the same value in order for you to log in.

Can you by chance map a drive to the PC from another, using the most recent computer name? If you can, I'll bet you can access the registry, and you can check those entries. Once I remember what they are.

    Check out this key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Look at the 'AltDefaultDomainName' and 'DefaultDomainName'. Make sure they're the same.

Make sure they're the same name as your computer, that is. The domain name would be there if your PC was still on a domain.

Well, I can change the values in the registry as you have noted, but I am not sure of my computer name. Do you know where I can view/change that in the registry? And if I understand correctly, I should have the domain name and altdomain name set to the name of my machine.

    That's right.

    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ComputerName\

See if anything under that looks familiar.

well, domain name, altdomain name, and computer name are all the same. Does the fact that I changed workgroup names come into play. Do you where I can see that value in the registry?
