Windows XP and hardware compatibility

I recently purchased Windows XP Pro for my home PC and have come across a few cases where older parts of my PC are not Windows XP compatible. My modem wasn't so Bellsouth provided me with a new one free. Now I had a relatively new keyboard and optical mouse (both IBM) that don't quite work. I like both a lot and don't want to go out and drop another 50+ dollars on similar ones that may or may not be XP compatible. I have searched all over IBM.com and microsoft.com looking for drivers for both and so far have come up empty. The keyboard is a IBM Media Access Pro Keyboard Model: 09N5549 and the mouse is a optical mouse (not sure the model number). The mouse lights up but doesn't move the cursor around. Could the USB port be bad? I have a USB port for my printer and it works fine. I have 2 USB ports, one for the printer and one hopefully for the keyboard. Then the mouse daisey chains off the keyboard. Any suggestions?

Thank god for MS making our world so much nicer.

sorry, no suggestions. NT 4.0 wouldn't install on my old PC because my HD was not supported (as best as I could determine).

Bleah. This is 2002, you'd think shit like incompatible keyboards and mice wouldn't exist anymore.

What's Vegas' line on how long it takes Buddy to chime in on this one? ;)

Well, I have few. The best suggestion I can make for your situation would be to go back Win98.

How's that Mark? Math?:D

If your keyboard is having troubles, and it's a standard ps/2 device, the problem may be that your motherboard won't work with XP. If the motherboard doesn't work 100% with XP, there's no way I'd try to troubleshoot anything else before getting that resolved.

Might want to check with the motherboard maker and see what they say.

Probably OK to go to Win2000, unless PP got XP specifically for some other reason.

I cant imagine an optical mouse or ibm keyboard not working with xp. i think you got a different problem of some sort.

we had to get a new motherboard for ours(i think) when we loaded XP (which btw, we downloaded for nothing). we have the optical mouse and it works just fine with XP. mike (the yeti) is getting pretty damn good at this computer crap, his email is

The light on the mouse works but the cursor doesn't move when I move the mouse. Something minor I bet but still annoying
