Is it that or can they just stick any decent back behind that cut blocking OL and get good yards? Portis and Droughns sure do not look that great since they left Denver.

Droughns does have a 1000 yards. He's been the one good thing in Cleveland.

Portis does too. 4.3 a carry.

Their passing offenses have let them down.

I did not say they fell off the fave of the earth but they sure do not look as good as they did in Denver. Portis looked like he was the best back in the NFL when he was in Denver 1591 yards and 14 touchdowns in 13 games. He averaged 5.5 yards per carry in Denver. He has been decent in DC but nowhere near what he was in Denver.

to bring this back around to Witherspoon, depending on which part of nfl.com you look at, he either leads the team with 8 defended passes or co-leads with 10 (with Gamble and Lucas).
Which is freaking outstanding for a linebacker 75% of the way through a season. Good enough for ~25th in the league for total defenders.

I'm thinking if we lose Draft & Spoon next year I'm going to be sad and wish they'd not jumped on Morgan so fast. I like Morgan, but rewatching Atlanta again today, I'd be happy with Draft & Spoon out there. It's one case where Fox & Co deviated from getting at least somewhat similar talent for less $$.

No question that Witherspoon is playing well this season (and I'd love to keep him around), but this is a perfect illustration of the problem I have with PDs. There is no distinction at all between an awesome play in coverage like WW made on the Brady interception, and the PD against Atlanta where Vick essentially threw the ball right at him (and he wasn't covering anyone at the time) but WW dropped the interception. You're no doubt aware of all that, it's just something that bothers me about the football statistic. I wish there were some way to differentiate between a guy actually making a play on a ball (usually while covering someone) and someone just getting a hand up or otherwise being in the way of a pass. That's why PDs don't mean a lot to me when discussing linebackers.
