Anyway, I find it interesting that I defended Henning for years and now I'm bitching about his play-calling. And while we're on that subject, it would be nice to see more intermediate routes now that we have a solid line and some good receivers. Often it seems like we either run the quick hitches and slants or the streak/post/corner deep stuff. A 15 yard curl or in (no outs, please, since Jake floats those for INTs) would be nice to see once in a while, especially when defenses leave gaping holes in the middle by squatting their corners up close to the line and dropping their safeties deep. Teaching Jake to do something other than the worst play-action fake I've ever seen in my life would help too.

Good Idea. I'll copy and paste this line to you later on when you two go toe to toe later on in the season. :trophy:

When Collin and I argue, it's because we're arguing about a topic. Not because I sniped him because of some months-old ass whipping you got.

I would also be nice if Jake would occasionally look off a receiver. How many times has he gone back in his usual drop back and rarely looks side to side for someone other than SS. Having Key "should" help. I am just hoping the disparity between Smith's 102 catches and the next highest player isn't in the 20's again.

Floating outs are a big issue with Jake (probably his biggest issue, and it's slowly growing into his only issue). He's become a better quarterback since 2003. But he has to quit floating the outs. He started that shit right out of the gate last year vs. New Orleans, and was picked off by Jason Craft (so, you know how fucking bad it must have been thrown). He ended the year floating out routes. In between, he still floated them, but got away with many, while doing many other things very well.

With as much PA as we run (particularly out of the I, and/or with two TE's), JD should absolutely work on his technique. He throws a crisp ball turning out from a play fake, but he never fully sells the fake itself. I think it's more of a rhythm crutch for JD than anything. (as I recalled us running PA twice on the game tying drive in the Super Bowl). I don't think he (or Henning) thinks too much about using the PA for the purpose of fooling the coverage, but more for allowing Delhomme to establish some sort of rhythm before setting his feet to release. (in fact, I recall Delhomme discussing this during one of the Monday Night call-in shows on the network)

excellent specific run offense stuff in this thread btw

As far as Foster is concerned, I seem to recall that most of his fumbles were during extreme efforts to gain a little more yardage. If anything his problem seems to be too much effort, not a lack thereof. That ball would get pretty damn far away from his body during some extra move or additional contortion. He seems to have corrected that dangerous “ball arm flinging” problem for the most part. I do not recall any of his injuries being anything other than plain bad luck though and I don’t know what he can do to “fix” that.
Since our guys drafted DW I have been feeling like Foster will have a white hot fire under his butt to do whatever he has to do to remain the starter . . . from holding onto the ball to staying on the field (just take the shot to numb the sore toe, etc). He does need to run smarter apparently and think, not just act and react. As far as injuries are concerned, for Foster to stay healthy we are going to need to rely mostly on luck unfortunately. That luck thing has been the bitch for us for too many seasons and I keep waiting for us to be the positive beneficiaries of the law of averages. Maybe this is the year.)

The play-action thing is something that doesn't get enough attention, even from me, because it's strictly laziness. Anyone should be able to do a half-decent PA fake, but Jake honestly does about the worst one I've ever seen. It never fools the linebackers because Jake is usually exposing the ball in his right hand while "faking" a hand-off with his left. Considering how much we run the ball, it's criminal that we don't do a better job on PA.

    FSF:
A few threads back Piper was talking about how Delhomme had sufficient arm strength but sometimes floated things anyway, and the problem is the same one Eli Manning and Jay Cutler have. A lot of times, especially when throwing to the sides of the field, Jake does not step into his throws and simply wings the ball from an open stance where his feet are set anywhere from 45 degrees to perpendicular to the spot where he's trying to throw. When he turns his shoulder and steps into his throw, he doesn't have that problem, but it's a very common issue for him on those sideline throws.

I hate the idea of taking out a viable option, and making us easier to defend, because of stupidity. I'd rather say, Jake, if you throw an out, plant your feet right and don't come with that unbalanced side arm shit.
