I miss him. At least we forced ourselves to run the ball when he was in, as opposed to the delusion that Carr or Vinny can still be effective.

He might do OK if he can keep his composure.

49ers Sign QB Weinke, Place Smith on I/R

    December 12, 2007
The San Francisco 49ers announced Wednesday that they have signed veteran QB Chris Weinke. Terms of the contract were not announced by the team. Weinke’s signing was necessitated due to the injuries to QB Alex Smith (shoulder) and QB Trent Dilfer (concussion). Smith was placed on injured reserve and will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery on Thursday.

Weinke, (6-4, 232), spent six seasons with the Carolina Panthers after joining the team as a fourth-round draft pick out of Florida State in 2001. Weinke compiled a 32-3 record during his collegiate career and earned the Heisman Trophy and the Davey O’Brien Award as a senior in 2000.

He played in 27 NFL games with 19 starts and completed 373 pass attempts for 687 yards with 14 touchdown passes and 26 interceptions.

Weinke’s immediately was inserted into the starting lineup as a rookie and finished second in NFL history with 2,931 passing yards by a rookie, trailing only Peyton Manning of Indianapolis who threw for 3,793 yards in 1998.

Anyone ever wonder what would have happened if we had stuck with Weinkie in 2002? Benching him in favor of Rodney Peete had to be a big blow to his confidence. He never played as well again as he did in 2001. Granted he did not set the world on fire in 2001 but it was a fairly solid rookie campaign.

When he played again filling in for injured guys he seemed to have no confidence and last year had that deer in the headlights look about him.

Blind in the left eye will kill any QB.
