At the very least, he's done for now. The official word is front and center on NFL.com.

Goodell orders Vick not to report to camp

It's not technically a suspension because he isn't drawing a regular season paycheck yet. If you buy into the strict interpretation of the conduct policy that some do (I don't, but for the sake of discussion) then Goodell's hands would have be tied from an official suspension since this is a first "official" offense. Still, the practical effect of this order is the same, and Goodell's quoted statement is telling.

My guess: I wonder if perhaps the Union wasn't ready to sign on for a suspension yet. With this move, Goodell steps in and tells Vick he's persona non-grata at camp. That order works like a suspension except for the pay angle (but again, no game check yet). More to the point, it allows time for more info to filter in, and perhaps for Goodell to convince the union that an actual suspension is for the best.

Either way, there are a lot of people believing that Vick won't suit up at all this season, and some think he'll never suit up for the Falcons again.

And keep in mind, the word "generally" begins the phrase in the CBA that says first time offenders would not be disciplined. There is little general about this case. It ain't Pac-Man throwing some cash at some strippers and then asking for it back. This involves gambling, animal cruelty, and Vick's after the fact lying directly to the commissoner himself.

The is just a preliminary. Both the league and the Union want to find a little more rope to hang him with, because this is precedent setting. But he's already been measured.

This is a forced leave of absense that will be acceptbale to all parties. If in the odd chance that Vick gets totally cleared, to ban him now would leave egg on their faces, including the Union for not taking up for him. It might kill the conduct policy.

    Pretty similar to my take.

The conduct policy as posted on NFLPA.org takes all of five minutes to read, and that's if you take coffee breaks in-between paragraphs. It's not like they codified every possible angle. All it really says, in essence, is that if you screw up the Principal has the right to bust your ass.

Honestly, you could argue that if it hadn't been for Nifong and the Duke case , Vick might already be suspended. As it is now, everyone keeps citing that case as the reason to move slowly. I don't know that the analogy holds up when you look at the full picture, but that's what everybody keeps talking about.

Speaking of which, that ESPN piece really opened my eyes about that Jones' involvement in that shooting. I hadn't realized that he threatened to kill the bouncers when thrown out of the club before his associate later shot one.

Mortensen has discussed the possibility that Arthur Blank may have unintentionally forced Goodell into this spot. Blank apparently wanted to suspend Vick himself, but that would have been four games max and would have given Vick the right to have the case go to arbitration (where things could easily have gotten messy).

Of course, there's just as good a chance Goodell would have done it anyway. It makes sense given the potentially volatile atmosphere that could have come about if Vick were at camp.

Either way, the Falcons are probably better off if it's handled at the league level.

Yes. And after that incident, about a month ago police wanted to question Jones about a shooting that took place at another strip club. Jones reportably left a few hours before the shooting, but before he did (this was from listening to Cowherd) the he told the bouncers their he was going to get his gun.

Except if the league does the suspending then Blank is still on the hook for the 6 mil base salary
