Does anyone know what town in Iowa this Calahan kid is from?

Also, is there some connection on the staff or a recruiting link to Iowa?

A kid that graduated w/ my sister is transfering down there to play basketball in 2004 and I am wondering where the connection is. Seems kind of odd he'd pull that out of nowhere when there are a number of schools that recruited him.

Well, I should know... being skuncw and all.. ;) There is a connection, but a few beers and a little anger at CBS and it slips my mind... I know one of the slams on that dumb ass coach that got fired at FSU was that he let Brett Blizzard (now with UNCW) slip out of FSU land when he was right there... but there is in fact a connection to IOWA - I'll get back to you if someone does not beat me to it...

I do recall that UNCW had a tall white boy 5-10 years ago that was a decent center... next best stats to Brian Rowsom that played in the NBA a few years. (Brian also played against David Robinson at NAVY) - any way I can not recall the white boys name, but I think he was from IOWA...

There really is no connection, Wainwright recruits from all over though. UNCW is one of those places that attracts people from all over, not just basketball players, but students in general. The beach probably has a lot to do with that. A couple players are from Texas, FL, etc.

Sandman you still never answered my question about whether or not you are in school here? This place is CRAZY right now..or was a while ago. Everyone is downtown now, but I'm still here because I have a track meet this weekend.

JCB, sorry bout that, nah, I finally finsihed up at the Cameron school of business in 1991. (after skipping school for several years) - anyway, I live outside of Charlotte now...

Anyway, depending on the year, I always try to kick a few hundred back to the athletic department at UNCW.... I wish I was there 2nite... I could take you anywhere in town or campus with a blindfold on... ;)

Edit... but JCB they did have a dude from IOWA and there is a connection there...

Sand Man, are you thinking of Matt Fish? Thanks for the Brian Rowsom flashback, one of the ugliest players to ever don a Hornets uniform :)

No - thank you, yes Matt Fish would be the guy I was talking about. I thought he was from IOWA.

Anyway, he also drank like a fish...;)

This is too funny, Matt has his own web page...

Reeling in the Fish
The big breaks and long stall of Matt Fish's career Matt Fish
By: David Lawson

It all started one early morning, November, 18, 1969. Matthew Fish is born in Washington, Iowa. And who knows when it all will end. Matt a 6 foot 11, 235 pound NBA free agent Center has had a interesting career of moves and big breaks.
The whole basketball thing started at Washington High School. Matt was a freshman in 1983 and was going to sign up to play piano just like he had since he was 4. His father, a jantior at the school had talked him out of it. He said he was getting tired of piano and Matt was tall for his age. His dad wanted him to play a sport with a positon that required height. So Matt had no choice and in enroled as a Center. He made the team and pretty soon was the star of the team and was soon to be the first pro basketball player that had ever played at Washington. Even though he got picked on a lot because of his funny last name and he lived in a small, underground house as a kid he played basketball for all 4 years at high school.
Then he was accepted at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
